Getting the Wheeling Fever
I had my Monty out the last few weekends wheeling and hunting and I noticed some pulling in the front end. I took into a shop for an alignment and to check it out. They said I need a new lower Ball Joint (drivers side) and the Bearings repacked (lots of play) anyway they gave me a quote with the parts, labor & alignment of 340.00 is this a good deal? Should I try to tackle this or just let them do it. Any advice is really appreciated. I have 2 days to consider it as they wait for parts.

Hard to tell - from New Zealand!

However, over here a lower ball joint is about $50, a wheel alignment is about $60 and it should only take an hour's labour (at most) to replace the ball joint and adjust the bearings. So add on about $70 - $100 for labor. Adding it all up is about $210. Which at current rate of exchange is about US$142.00.

Come and live in New Zealand!!!!

Hello,

Have you checked out "Project Front End" Parts 1 & 2 (in the tech section)? I havent looked at that article in a while, but I think all this was covered including part no's and prices. Havent had to do this fix yet (knock on wood), but it is a great resource with lots of pics (and humor). Hope this steers you in the right direction.

The ultimate decision rests with $$ vs. time/knowledge/tools. I work on my Raider to save money, unless I have no time. The shop quote sounds like book rate + parts, not too bad a quote in my recent experience.

$340 is probably about right around here. You can (and should) shop around, but I think it would cost at least a couple hundred or so more where I work.

I agree - $340.00 is a good price as long as the work is done right. I mean, as dumb as it may sound, if a shop was going to do all this work for $100.00 you probably don't want them working on your truck. As far as doing the work yourself, the ball joints are fairly easy on this one - they bolt on. Packing/adjusting wheel bearings is pretty simple but a lot of people don't know how to do it and end up too loose (lots of wheel play like you have right now) or too tight (wheel bearing burns up).

Thanks. Yeah Ive got no time, just moved, no desire to wrench in the cold at night so....off to the shop.
Sounds like I'm getting a fair shake on the price.

Where abouts are you in CA? Although it may not be necessary in this case, in the future, if you can also give the details of their quote (hours labor, parts cost, hourly labor rates) it will help determine if it's a fair quote.
