95/3.0 Montero.
On the way to work today the AT light started flashing during braking. I am also getting a check engine at times, but neither is on all the time. Only happening during braking. The manual is no help, just says the ECU has detected a fault.
Any ideas?

Check the fluid level.

Have you ever changed the AT fluid?

If you change it, make sure you use compatible fluid if not Mitsu OE fluid. If you mess up and put incompatible fluid, there's a 99% certainty that you will be rebuilding your transmission. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

ATF was changed about 15K miles ago, with Mits ATF, and levels are good.
Once the engine warmed up the warning lights stopped, and only happened during a period that local temps never got above freezing. I am wondering if a sensor got covered with ice that finally got melted off. I have had the car out Friday, and Sat and there is no sign of the problem.

There have been other instances of water affecting the AT temp light, so you are probably OK.
