2001 TJ will not go into gear HELP PLEASE!!! #768851 12/01/06 05:20 AM

Ive had it to two shops now, one was jeep and they just wanted to take my money and where not very resourceful, and just want to start replacing parts. Heres the problem. Jeep intermitently will not shift into gear with the clutch depressed. A little history. About a year ago I had the Clutch, pressure plate nad throw out bearing replaced. With the jeep off it goes into gear. It sometimes makes noise kinda ticking noise, with the clutch depressed I let it a little ways out it goes away and then a little farther and it comes back. You have to push real har in first to get it to pop in, then maybe and hour later it will shift fine for a while. Also before the problem started you could always here the throw out bearing, then when you depress the clutch in, the noise would go away and let the clutch out it would come back. Now that theres problems, when you press the clutch in the throwout bearing noise is still there. Im stumped and the jeep mechanics are stumped, the said it could be the Slave cylinder and tell me they want to replace it and drop my tranny to look around also. Someone please help me I just want to get it back on the road, Im hopeing its just the slave. Thanks from a newbie. James

Dude you need to tell us more about the Jeep itself. What is it you are asking about.. There are several types of slaves and master cyls in the various Jeeps.
First thing I would advise is to PUMP the clutch pedal.. If that works you prolly need a master cyl.. The slave syls usually lose their seal and squirt all their fluid out when they go away.

Sorry its a 2001 Jeep Wrangler TJ Manuel tranny. Dana 44 rear, fabtech 4 inch susp, ox lockers front and rear, custom body armor, Quadratec custom bumber and tire carrier, Im just gettin into offroading. Its not leaking fluid anywhere I have checked several times over the last couple weeks since the problem. I pump the clutch it seems to have normal pressure, and does not slipe like a bad clutch. What are the simptoms of a bad pilot bearing?

A worn pilot bearing can give viberation as the engine picks up rpm.. I have seen em run without pilots in them. I doubt that would be your problem. Your problem does sound like a hyd pressure problem. By pumping the pedal perhaps you can build up enough pressure to open the clutch and allow shifting to occur. If so then replace the master cyl.

If it was me I'd pull the trainy and check out the clutch. A friend had a clutch replaced and started doing what your describing within a few months of the new clutch. A spring on the pressure plate had broken loose and was flopping around in there. Sometimes it woked OK, other times it did odd things. He had to replace everything again, that time he used better quality parts and didn't have to fool around with it again.
