Getting the Wheeling Fever
So while i was out in the garage tonight working on getting my disc brake conversion to work (still doesnt)I noticed that the rotor was wobbling a little bit on the driver's side. I figured it was dirt and crud behind it so i pulled it off and wire wheeled the mounting surface which did not help the wobbling at all. After using a level to judge the amount of bent it is, there is about 1/16" of actual side to side motion. After all this i thought id check the other side as well...yup, same with that side. Has anyone ever had 2 bent axles?? I havent ever jumped this truck but I dont know about the PO. Could a bent rear housing make the shafts look like they are wobbling?

I am at a loss as to how this would happen!

Thanks!

Do you know if the rear end has been apart at all?

You said 'PO'----leaves you wide open. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

I put a different Third in it that was professionally installed, the bearings are new on the axles and there's no leaking gear lube.

Well, I have yet to see a straight rear axle shaft, I have 6 or so and all are bent to some degree or another. One drawback of the semi-floating design, the vehicle weight is cantilevered out past the single rear wheel bearing. And a bent housing should not make the axle wobble.

so if its off by about 1/16" on the axle flange edge that wont make much difference? With a tire on it that would really multiply how much out of true it was and create vibes on the road. How much are they usually off on the ones that you have?

The runout spec is here:

http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-buchanan/93fsm/suspensionandaxle/33rearaxle.pdf

This is for a '93, but I don't think the older trucks' specs could be that much more different.

Ill check into those specs. From what I know of, the axles that I have in there are from the early 90's as well.

Thanks!

Hehe! That McNeilus place is practically in my back yard. I have the IFS housing so they wont work but I thought that was pretty cool that you found them there. I have spare shafts but ill have to get the backing plates pressed off and this last set cost me $70 to have done :S Might give the "Hate the Concrete" method a shot.

Thanks for your help!
