Is the 22RE supposed to rev up when you tap the EGR valve?

If the EGR is sticking open, then tapping on it will smooth out the otherwise rough idle.

My idle is a little rough, but the valve is new. If the engine RPM increases when I tap on it with a ratchet, do you think it could be stuck open?

Sure the vacuum lines are routed correctly? Sounds like it's getting vacuum when it shouldn't (if it's new and working right).

Well, if I apply direct manifold vacuum to it it kills the engine. I BELIEVE the lines are routed directly, I ran across a problem with some discrepancies between the various manual sources (FSM, Chilton, ALLDATA, etc) on how they're supposed to be routed when I put the valve in so it's a possibility. I'll either take a picture or make a diagram of what I have and we'll see if it's right smile

Nah, the vacuum lines are routed per the FSM. While at work today I took a look at a guy's 88 22RE and his setup was different. Is that normal?

You can have different vacuum from year to year, nothing major though. I would try replacing your vacuum hoses, they are cheap.
If they are clogged with oil, no vacuum. Worn out, they can collapse.

Your egr vavle runs through the intake plenum and exits right in front of the throttle body. If that tube is clogged, it is just like having a clogged egr.

Vacuum lines are new (less than 5000 miles). I might remove the plenum and clean the tube out, though. Is it actually cast into the plenum itself?

i seriously doubt your egr is clogged if youre getting those symptoms, so i wouldnt worry about cleaning it. i think it has to do w/ your efi system, one of the sensors or something.

Yeah the tube is cast into the plenum. You can se where the egr pumps into the plenum just behind the intake. My PCV vavle had been clogged for years(?) PO never maintained anything. Egr was toast, tube almost solid, caused my throttle body flap stick.
