Doing a head gasket on a 22RE.

Yes, the same one I was asking about. I was filling the radiator and was wondering why I was able to put about 3.5 gallons in. It was all going in the #1 cylinder.

Anyway, is this set any good? It looks pretty complete.

What the heck are those squarish looking gaskets on either side?

I would find out who the maker of the Head gasket is, like Felpro or some sort. I've usually had good luck w/ Napa's parts, and I beleive most of their gasket items Are Felpro now adays. Which, in my opinion, Are very good gaskets.
I wanna say the square ones are used with the intake manifold in some way, don't hold me to it though, didn't use mine that came with my kit either =P

I'm pretty sure one of those square gaskets goes inside the valve cover... there should be a metal piece that screws on to the inside of the valve cover... about the same shape and size as those gaskets...

napa gaskets are made by victor, a division of danacorp. they are good gaskets, have had no problems with them.

The EGR is recently integrated into the intake gasket; the item below the head outline. That section is to your right.
The item at the very top is is a waste.

The 2 vertical rectangular gasket are ?? I keep 'em for the gasket material more than anything.

NAPA does sell a front end kit for the TC cover. Again, the front seal for the water pump are okay for spares, but you can remove the TC without removing the WP, aside from one bolt.

The gasket in the lower right is for the EGR plate in the back of the head; the stock one is of heavy material; if this is paper, hand the WHOLE kit back.

For the hard pipes 2x (at the front of the head outline) might be the same as for the EGR, assuming close to stock. ASK THE DEALER The one above it I can only guess is for the t'stat.

NAPA's valve cover kit typically includes:\
valve cover gasket
4 valve cover grommets (note: you may have to adjust the bolts in order to get a proper seal, as the valve cover nuts are acorn nuts)
2 -1/2 moon gaskets for the front/aft gaskets which rest on the head on a FINE layer of RTV sealant.

Hope that helps somewhat. I don't like trusting the front and rear main seals except to Yota, given our extremes. I also like OEM or www.engnbldr.com for my head gaskets, given our temp extremes up here.

Hope that helps!

84toyota's right- those fit in the evaporator box mounted in the valve cover. As far as quality, I can't grip 'em as of yet.

Strange, those are riveted in on all the rigs I've worked on, no way to get it apart.

They arent rivets, they are dowel pins. I dont remember how exactly I got mine off but I kinda wish I never did. I think I used a combination of screwdrivers and pliers to pry it off...thinking there would be a ton of carbon buildup like there was on the rest of the valve cover....but there wasnt much. Bent it up a little but its fixable; very thin metal so you can just hammer it back in shape and press it back on those pins. imo-i wouldnt mess with it though
