This is a total shot in the dark, but I noticed above that you mentioned trying use a tail light mounting screw as your grouding point for the converter box. Not sure about the monty, but on some vehicles those screws go into threaded plastic clips instead of bare metal. Just a thought.

Make sure when you're testing the connector that your test light is clamped onto the bare ground pin on the connector, NOT onto the frame or bumper.

The ground is sandwiched between the sheet metal and the threaded clip the screw threads into. I tested the connector just as you described by clamping the light to the ground pin.

I am almost wondering if the convertor box is damage? it is not impossible, but the inconsistent results has been real baffling in this process. Does anyone see anything wrong with having to use the turn signal wire for my brake light?

You need a converter in order to light the brake lights.

Why? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I made my own harness without one. The convertor in the picture above is a draw...4 wires in and 4 wires out. The Montero Gen I uses separate wires for the L (stop), R (stop) and running lights. If you are going to wire up for a 4-wire flat connector, this is already a simple proposition.

A convertor is only useful on a vehicle equipped with L, R separate from the brake...5 circuits in and 4 out.

I can't remember what I did on the Gen 1, but the Gen 2's need the converter as the brake lights are separate from the turn signal lights, amber turn, red brakes.

Try what Russell said, nothing to loose, but your time.

So the suggestion is to try a straight wire set up and tap the same points I am tapping into with my current set up and it should work? Thats what I was thinking from the beginning when I was testing everything, but Hearing everyone say converter I made sure i got one. I think I got a spare 4 wire plug and wire to test out. I will test it out so we can put this dog to rest. thanks yall.

I have no Gen II experience on which to draw. The title of this thread is about Gen I, all I'm saying. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

My SWB was rigged to pull way back when I got it. It was simple 4-wire and tapped into the truck's harness where the wires run up from underneath and into the rear light housings.

My Gen II's are 4-wire that connect up inside the rear light housings. No converter, just OEM style connnectors that hook up in between the truck's harness and the lights' connectors. Complete plug-n-play.

This dog can finally put to rest. Rxinhed is correct.

"GEN 1 TRAILER WIRING DOES NOT NEED A CONVERTER BOX"

Gen 1 is easy set up. A simple 4 wire harness will work. The turn signals tap into the bottom wire of the tail light plug on each side. It the green wire. The park light taps into the red wire on the top of the tail light plug. Ground can be grounded anywhere, but I mounted mine to the mounting screw.

Here are some pics showing the wiring. This thread might need to be added to the Tech reference section so no one else gets confused.

Depending on your climate, I would consider sealing the splices in some way. My SWB came from RI and was used to trailer a boat. Those splice connectors didn't keep out the elements and the wires were corroded and actually starting to fail and short after I had the rig for a short while. The 3M self-sealing tape is a great product...
