I remember reading that some of you guys were planning a trip down to the Altar Desert. I had a chance to fly along the border today at 20,000 feet on my way to San Diego, and had a good view of the Altar and the Dunes. The Dunes are very imposing looking; it looks like the only way through them is to just drive up one side and down the other for a few days. To the south of the dunes it opens up to desert and a very large dry lake and then the coast.
Looks like it would be a fun trip if you did it in the early spring or late fall. All I can say is bring a lot of water and fuel, because there is nothing out there or nearby.

I am the one working (slowly) on it. The consensus seemed to be that late Oct. was the earliest most people could be ready. I have been off the board for a few weeks, so I should probably update and remind people. You are right though, there will be a couple of days of up and down. The shortest route is about 50-60 miles of dunes and then we are at El Golfo just south of the Colorado mouth where gas and water as well as a new highway can be found. It should be a lot of fun, but I am still trying to get my truck set up fully the way I want it. Still, I think it will be a blast, particularly since my new business will (hopefully) be set up by then and anyone who wants can spend a few days at my house near the beach playing in the surf with boats after a few days of playing in the sand with trucks... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
