Getting the Wheeling Fever

I remember reading that some of you guys were planning a trip down to the Altar Desert. I had a chance to fly along the border today at 20,000 feet on my way to San Diego, and had a good view of the Altar and the Dunes. The Dunes are very imposing looking; it looks like the only way through them is to just drive up one side and down the other for a few days. To the south of the dunes it opens up to desert and a very large dry lake and then the coast.
Looks like it would be a fun trip if you did it in the early spring or late fall. All I can say is bring a lot of water and fuel, because there is nothing out there or nearby.
