It all depends, none of the '83 trucks used the larger filter because none came with Cali emmissions. All Mitsubishi and Ram 50 diesel trucks in 84-85 that were equipped with Cali emmissions(EGR) were fitted with that larger filter as part of the Cali emmisions. I personally avoid buying a Cali emmisions truck if at all possible because it kills the fuel milage not to mention the price of this filter. Be aware that some trucks equipped with California emmisssions were sold in other states but all truck sold in Cali 84-85 were equipped with Cali emmissions.


That would mean that the engine in my truck (removed from a wrecked D50 with small filter) is non Cali emissions. I think that is a good thing. My friends truck has the 4D56 intercooled turbo engine (used from Japan), and he had to use the filter housing from the old engine, as the 4D56 housing was too close to the frame (I think).
