The actual Sunflower Mine is around 4400', the hills and trails around it are between 3900' and 4800' or so. I was looking at going to Pyeatte too, but I am with you Toasty on having only one winch (I certainly won't have one in a week, just found out I won't have my bumper till August). Anyone have any interest or willingness to do anything near Prescott? I don't know any specific trails myself, but having visited a friend up there a couple weeks ago, it was nice. I wouldn't mind spending the weekend up there either...

There's a trail that heads west out of Mayer, which is on the road to Prescott. It links up with the road between I-17 and Crown King.

We got bumped out of getting Hope's company's cabin this weekend, due to a paying renter taking it (employees going for free = last priority). Maybe we'll be luckier next weekend. If so, the Senator Highway runs between Crown King and Prescott and makes for a nice Sunday drive, then back to I-17 and home.

I can go pretty much anywhere, but somebody should decide where that somewhere is.

Sunflower Mine is fun but really short - when Adam and I did the trail a few years ago it took us less than 2 hours with a lengthy stop at the mine.

DeSoto Mine is a difficult trail up in the Bradshaws - it's about a 4-5 hour trail plus 2 hours each way to get there and back.

Smiley Rock is another fun trail that starts in Jerome and goes up to the top of Mingus Mountain - about 4 hours (a lot of it is dirt roads) plus 2 1/4 hours each way to get there & back.

Both of those should be up high enough to be significantly cooler than the desert, but they're a bit more of a drive to get to, especially for Adam.

I like Desoto, If it wasn't so hot i'd say we should do table mesa trails. Sunflower can be a short trip but there is another trail that branches off and heads up into the pines that we did the last time we were there. I also like Hackberry creek but that's at 3900 ft and then drops into a canyon, i can't remember if it was hot there in the summer or not. We also need to watch the weather, i doubt it will rain but some trails are fuun in the rain and others are deadly.

Table Mesa would be great because it's so close, but yes, it will be hot.

It's a shame that Smily rock is 2 plus hours for you guy's, (25 min. or so to the trailhead for me) because that's a real fun trail, in the 5500 to 7200 ft. range.
I'm itching for another Montero, and have a couple to look at this week.
I'll keep you posted. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

I like Desoto,

I don't know it, but I will add a third vote if this one is high country and a good choice. I like being in the Bradshaws because it gives me some good excuses to do other things too...

I love Jerome too, but 2 1/4? I am in Flagstaff after that much time on the 17.. or are you talking about the drive from Adam's area? Either way, I understand if these are too far for some, but still... I vote north!
