The cruise control gets its speed info from the VSS, which is part of the speedometer, which is driven by the cable. So, the cable can definitely cause CC issues.

Interesting.

I have been paying attention to the speedometer and have noticed that it is rather "jerky" as well. So maybe that's it. I'll order the speedometer cable, replace it, and see if that fixes it. I'll update this thread once it's replaced.

Thanks to everyone who contributed!!

The part number fer the automatic transmission speedometer cable is 8371034080.

From ToyotaPartSales.com I came up with this...

OEM Catalog
Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
8371034080 $69.02 $0.00 $49.79

CABLE ASSY, SPEEDOME

I clearly do not know how to search that web site. What's the best way to search there?

Thanks.

They just changed the website...looks like you need to use something else besides FireFox. IE or Chrome seems to work well. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Need a Spot
Had the same problem on my 96 a few years back, auto tran, and was able to fix it with a new speedometer cable.

Cool. I've ordered the cable so should have it in a few days.

And I think I figured out how to use those two web sites. Thanks for the links!!

Actually pretty quick. Had to remove the lower panel below the steering wheel. Then, had to unscrew the speedometer console. Once that was done, I was able to unhook the cable and pull it out. Unscrewed the end from the transfer case and detached it all. Put the new one in and reattached everything. Worked like a charm!!

Took me about 30 mins total. The hardest part was unhooking from the various hooks under the truck. Very easy job.
