...in my uber-power 1.6L Miata I bet they had a giggle when I wrote down ~100hp on the reg form! It might not even have that much now after 161K miles. I think there was one car there with less HP than me. A stock late 80's prelude My car was really good at going round the corner at the end of the track though

Tell you what, for $20 it was a good laugh. I went with some Mustang lovin' neighbors. The best I managed was a 0.01 sec reaction time, 81.7mph and 16.8 sec 1/4 mile. Not too devastating for the other participants, although I did beat a Jeep Cherokee

There were some cool cars too. Got chatting with a guy in a factory 5 cobra. Pretty sweet car.

Angelo, next time you should come down there in your 3000. It was at the zmax track across from the motor speedway

Hate to break it to you Reuben....

But thru 87, the smaller 1.8L was 105hp. 88-91 2.0L was 104hp. The first car I ever really built was an 87 non-Si Prelude. 149mph top speed, downhill, as verified by a shockingly friendly Florida Highway Patrolman (who knew my Dad ) Man, that car was sweet.

The drag strip is an eye opening experience, fer shur...

Pics?

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

That's about the same results I got the first time I went to a drag strip..... but it was 1958 and I was driving a bone stock 1951 Ford coupe with a flathead V8........ and that was before I rebuilt the engine. In fairness, I think I did lighten the car a bit by removing the hub caps.

Poo! Actually, Mazda claims the 1.6L had 116hp Buuut, they seem to dyno (why??) at about 95hp stock. Add my nice Borla exhaust, high-flow cat and super duper K&N...I reckon they are worth 5hp.

No pics, but I have been promised a video of my last run. Hopefully it will show up later.

I have to admit, the stats I posted were not all on the same run

Frank, give me a break. You had double the cylinders Having said that, I wonder if I would have done 82mph if I had taken the spare wheel out of the boot

I'll do it again. It was fun

Oh, and question for those who know. Why do the nitrous people purge gas before their run?

Mazda might claim 116 hp but manufacturers claims are usually based on flywheel power, not power to the ground. A 94 Miata with a bone stock 1.8, which is claimed by Mazda to make 128 hp, will actually make 96 whp and 92 wtq all day long on a Dyno Dynamics. That's from the mouth of Ed York who spends a bunch of time prepping SM cars in his shop. A bone stock 1.6 will be closer to 90 whp, maybe 95 if you're on a Dynojet. Not sure how much a K&N would help if it's still in front of the stock restrictive AFM, but the cat & exhaust have to be worth a couple ponies. It might not be crazy powerful but at least you didn't blow up your diff on the launch.

Double the weight, too....... and only half the gears with 3 on the tree. I think my first time through was 17 seconds at 87mph.

You did have a good reaction time, though. There's probably no way I could get that now.

Frank

They purge the Nitrous to make sure they have a "full line" of nitrous with no air pockets possibly.

Would the Mazda turbo engine from a Probe GT fit into a Miata? I would think that would be a nice power upgrade.

Totally agree with you Scott re factory HP claims. However, I think you'd have a pretty tired 1.6L at only 90rwhp. From memory the maintain difference between the 1.6 and the 1.8 is not power but torque. That's what breaks the teeny 6" 1.6L diff. I did worry about my diff on that sticky track and Falken azenis tires. It whines at the best of times I have new noises today I'm having real trouble finding an open 7" pumpkin (plus prop and drive shafts) without paying stupid ebay prices. I want an open because I've got a nice RX-7 clutch LSD to go with it. Let me know if you come across someone trying to get rid of theirs after a torsen swap or something.

Talking of open diffs, I had to giggle at those who did 'big time' burn outs with a open diff. One tire producing plumes of smoke while the other tire sat stationary and watched Heat up one tire sir?

I was 'weighting' for that (sorry, terrible joke). However, I appreciate the compliment of assuming I could use all 5 gears in a 1/4 mile Never got to 5th...need a longer track

All good fun.

Thanks for the info Icy. That makes sense

Oh and reaction time...more luck than anything I'd say. My neighbor got 004 and then 002 He must have a tranquil marriage as he can clearly see what's coming Never wait for green
