Give me a moment to rant will you? I bought a 2005 Xterra to replace my aging 90 2dr, that was beyond reasonable help in my mind. It was the first "modern" 4x4 to come out, before the H3, JK, and FJ. If I did it over again it would be a JK. So, at 40K rarely driven miles, here is what an Xterra has to offer.
1. Front exploding diffs all years.(must be swapped out)
2. Rear exploding diffs 05-07(mine exploded)
3. Exploding carbon canister(have to add filter)
4. Exploding transmission due to radiator defects 05-08(I bi-passed the radiator)
5. Leaf springs that cannot hold the truck up.
6. Nutty electronics.
7. Hideous transfer case.(Gen II case may be a pain, bit it works!)
8. Under sized U-joints.
9. The whimpy rear leaf springs bottom out so bad they bend the rear axle tube and axles.

Now keep in mind I have hardly ever wheeled this POS. And the Gen II is LIGHT YEARS ahead of a Gen I Xterra, which is a hopeless pile of junk. It may be time to find a Gen II in decent shape. Why cant anyone else build a truck REMOTELY as strong? Just too expensive I suppose.

Get a gen 2:5 sr. Sure there isn't a huge after market, but it will take the abuse that you dish out.

We've been too busy developing Double transfer cases / NP231's , sourcing more 5.29's, swapping in diesels, SAS'ing lots of rigs, to notice anything about X-terra's blowing up.

Welcome back. We hope you'll stick around, and build up a truck capable of handling your abuse.
