So yesterday my truck started flooding when I go to start it up. It will try to start and sputter for a couple of seconds before it dies. After a couple attemps it just won't start at all. You can smell the fuel so I know that it is flooding. After letting it sit for a while I was able to start it up and drive it home but then it did the same thing this morning. Any idea what would cause this?

You smell gas, is it coming from the engine bay or the exhaust?

With it being an efi engine it is damn near impossible to flood it, injectors are either on or off. However, one or more of the injectors or the cold start injector may be leaking fuel w/the engine off, or dumping fuel upon start up.

To see if the system is leaking fuel w/the engine off, crack the gas cap to relieve pressure from the line, or crack the fuel line at the cold start injector.

If that doesn't help any, pull the plugs after it sits a while, and turn it over a few times, if you get a good strong smell of gas, it could mean that the injectors are dumping fuel on start up.

Usually injectors clog up with age, but yours could be dumping too much gas.

Any significant decrease in gas mileage before this started? Does the engine and truck run normally after it starts?

Hard sputtering start when cold can also be a sign of a bad head gasket, any loss of radiator fluid taking place?

So the first time it finally started and appeared to run normally. I fired it up just fine the following morning and ran fine until I turned it off again. At that time it presented the same symptoms. Sputtering attempt at starting with fuel smell from exhaust.

I finally had time to look at it closer tonight. I pulled all the plugs and they seemed dry and no odd fouling. Coolant seems OK and I didn't notice any fuel consumption issues either. Cold start injector doesn't seem to be weeping; resistance was in spec as per the FSM.

Now when I try to start it (before and after I looked at everything today) I get no ignition at all and the fuel smell seems to have vanished.

Thanks for the help. Turned out to be the fuel pump.

Cool. When I had a fuel pump die on my 22R carb, it was fine at highway speeds, then would stumble and die as you decelerated. Diaphragm was shot.
