Anyone used a Speedi-Sleeve on Transmission Input Shaft? #1003812 07/21/10 04:19 PM

I've got a leak at my transmission input shaft. it's a G54 Transmission on an '87 22r. I tried to put a new seal on it last time I did the clutch several years ago, which was when I noticed that the input shaft was grooved. New seal didn't really do much; it still leaked.

I was having a clutch issue where the throw-out bearing was making some noise. I'm pretty sure it finally seized up and wore through the clutch pressure plate fingers, as I have absolutely no clutch at this point.

I was just getting ready to pull the trigger on a Marlin transmission since my second gear is a little crunchy, but aside from the groove on the input shaft, the transmission's in fair shape, and I could probably get by for a good while yet with just a new clutch set, but I need to get that leak fixed.

Anyone ever used a Speedi-Sleeve on a transmission shaft before? I think NAPA carries them. going to go order one today I think ~ $37. Part number is 99114 if anyone finds this several hundred years from now...

I haven't read/seen anything on that being done to an input shaft. If it were me, I'd shoot Marlin a query and find out if it's viable or not. He's da man for it.

My plugged nickel.

As I discovered when deciding what to do with a grooved crank pulley and rear crank surface, Marlin is no fan of sleeves. He says don't use them for those purposes. I'll bet that attitude extends to tranny input shafts.

His reasoning was/is that sleeves are difficult to install straight, and even if you manage to do so, they are too hard. Seals can't wear a (very minor) groove into them to mate well. The seals just wear down and fail.

Ted (Engnbldr) likes sleeves for cranks. Both are good people, but with differing opinions on the matter.

If you try a sleeve, please post how it works out.

I sent an email through the Marlin site early last week. haven't heard back.

I just received the heavy duty clutch set and flywheel from them though, and picked up a speedi-sleeve and new seal from NAPA. going to move forward with the quick repair plan and see how it all works out. will shoot a few photos as I go.

as for the getting them on straight, the sleeve came in a little "kit" which included the sleeve and an installation tool.

I'll post back with my results, but worst case, I can't see it being any worse than it already is.

thanks Ralph. yeah, I didn't even know these things were available for transmission input/output shafts until I called up NAPA on a whim. they seem to be the place that carries the obscure repair parts and tools.
