Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Here's the problem, replaced the exhaust on my v6 raider and drove it around parking lot to check for leaks. Heard none, so i crawled under to double check flanges, and it died. Would not restart. Coil and fuel pump checked and both work, though i get no spark from coil. Pulled ecuand opened it up to find a fried chip, not a capacitor, which were not leaking, yet. I'm gonna order a new chip to try and fix it, but are there any other things i should check on the ecu, besides the capacitors? What, if anything else should i check/test that could cause this and how do i test that component. I already tested the coil, plugs, wires, and fuel pump and they all work. Distributor rotor turns but i don't know how else to test it. I post pics of the ecu later today.

Did any wires touch your exhaust while doing your work, maybe a ground wire or a power wire to the starter? Just thinking outloud? Good luck.

No wires touched the exhaust, I built it on the bench and then bolted it to the flanges. here's a pic of my ecu, circled in red is the chip that fried and have since removed, ready for replacement. It is chip M5269L located in slot IC12. hope it works ![[Linked Image]](http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp156/epm131/Misc/2010-07-26_15-59-16_8412.jpg)

IIWY, I'd clean up the solder pads using soldering wick and verify, nothing else is messed up or discolored too badly on that board. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
Another thing to also check is what other components on that board might go bad that in turn could fry that part?

I think that thing is a stepper motor driver, and the only stepper motor I know of is the isc, so I'd check the isc resistances before I powered the board back up.....

I ordered the new chip, so I'll get the board back together and check my isc. I've heard you can remove the isc and set idle with an adjusting screw, because there's a flaw in the isc design that causes it overheat and short the ecu. Can you do this and how do you do this? Is there a writeup

there is an upgraded isc that solves a problem with shorting coils due to eating up the insulation with carb cleaner spray. try dsmisc.com

So I replaced the chip in the ecu and threw in a spare isc I had from my talon, the original isc was toast, but still no start. Turns out it was the timing belt, so I tore it apart and am gonna put a new timing belt in this weekend
