Need a Spot
Good day all. I have an 89 Raider 3.0 V6 Auto 4WD. I just had the rear main oil seal replaced and trans, transfer case fluid change by a local transmission shop $698. I drove the truck about 40 miles around town and everything was fine. I then drove about 135 miles on vacation and noticed the oil leak had returned. Besides improper installion, what causes the rear mail seal to leak? I guess I'll be taking it back to shop.

Bad seal, bad install, high oil level, clogged PCV system, snag on the crank end, as well as others that I'm sure I'm forgetting...

That thing ain't easy to successfully fix in a surgically clean environment...

The seal surface area on the 3.0L crankshaft can become worn after a time and not seal well even with proper installation technique. As Larry said, proper installation can be difficult to achieve for that seal on these engines.

Since you're having a shop do the installation, I won't suggest any ways to work around the installation issue - except to say that there is a seal surface repair sleeve available. It's made by Micro-Sleeve and sold through NAPA stores. Installing it is also an art form and can be problematic if the installer isn't familiar with repair sleeves. Done right, it's the best way to resolve the issue.

Eddy, I used to have springs pop off from time to time. Thankfully I read where (I believe it was you) pack them with grease I never had a spring pop off since.

Thank Charlie, the old drunken a&p mech who taught me most of the useful mechanical knowledge I know. I just pass it on...

Not that I'm against NAPA but a quick Google search showed they are sellign direct online, with 2 different rear seals available for original and regorund cranks. Sellign for about $7 ea here at their site.

Something I may have to look into myself!

Thanks for the tip!
