For those of you that have installed an aussie locker, Are there any on road side effects like clicking or anything like that with these units? They just got a shipment of Mitsu units and Im extremely tempted to get one but my Monty is my daily driver right now. Any and all information appreciated.

I'm tempted to buy one too. Just received an email about a week ago saying they received 10 units.

I had an auto locker in my 83 Toyota Truck. With the hubs unlocked in 2WD no changes. 4WD snow driving was alright but I kept my speed down. You will have slightly more steering effort. You shouldn't hear it (at least I never heard mine). I really liked the simplicity of it and low cost.

Who has one in their Montero? Does the SR have the same front 8" Diff?

On the road you'll have your hubs unlocked and be in 2WD, so no, you wont have any clicking or other side affects.

The side affects will be on the trail when your trying to make tight turns.

I have one. As Justice said, with the front hubs unlocked on-road, nothing is turning inside the differential and there is no difference from before.

I have not yet used mine except on dirt to see how it behaves and I cannot hear any clicking. I can see the t-case shifter move slightly every time it ratchets and that's the only way I would know it wasn't an open differential. There is a slightly heavier steering input required in sharp turns, but not enough that it bothers me.

I see no disadvantages to it at all unless one prefers to push a button for locking engagement. The primary advantage is price.

I have seen situations where I would not want to use a front locker that wasn't steerable for fear of sliding sideways. The Aussie Locker is completely steerable and once engaged at the trail head, should be fine left engaged until pavement is encountered.

EDIT: Just a note..You might want to consider an ARB if you plan to retain the use of Active Trac AWD. If not, go for it.

I'm not familiar with the Active Trac. Is that the 4H mode? Is it safe to use like AWD (on dry pavement)? How would the aussie locker affect it?

The ActiveTrak transfer case gives you the 4WD position (the first position of your transfer case shift lever) where your center differential is unlocked. This is AWD which allows you to be in 4wd on dry pavement. Moving your transfer case selector one more notch will lock the center differential for a true 4wd like your typical Jeep, Toyota, Nissan, etc.

Yes, you can shift on the fly into the 4hi mode at speeds of up to 60 MPH on or off pavement. Theres a Viscous coupling in the transfer case that makes it work.

I would imagine that you probably would not want to drive around on pavement at high speeds with a locked front diff, due to erratic handling, steering excessive tire wear etc. Thats just me though. While you could technically do it, you probably would not want to. I liked to use active track on long sandy roads in the desert. The AWD really helps pull you through the corners and kicking up rooser tails of sand. With the ARB front locker you leave it disengaged in this type of terrain and dont loose the features of the Active track.



Ive never experienced an auto locker in the front but, I know I would not want to drive pavement with my ARB engaged, steering is quite different.
