I've got a Crazy Charlie already, does my sewer pressure tests, and I'm pretty sure that was Stinky that I was following in the library the other day...

on alternators alone from napa, i think one in every three or so i've had to warranty.

I haven't seen it that high ever. So far, since the switch, I would say the overall quality has been improving. On the fast movers, they've run out of the old Rayloc stuff and are into the true BBB product. Not so on the odd and slower movers. Part of the deal was for BBB to purchase all of the old stock from Rayloc. I've been tracking some of the codes on the packaging and inspecting the units as they come in. At my store, we bench test every unit that comes in. We started doing that after a string of so-called defects. There have been zero DOA's in the last 18 months, and I sell around 250 units a month. Most of the time, the alternator gets blamed and called defective erroneously. I still defect them out to make the customer happy, though...

the vehicle's i've seen the most failures on are 6.0L powerstroke diesel's, and a landrover that we put two napa alternators on, fried two napa alternators on, then gave up and put a expensive <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" /> land rover oem one on. so im not 100% sure. the last tree 6.0L diesels we've done in the shop have come back within a month or so...

The 6.0 Powerjoke alternator was a known issue. Ford has kept some of the information on how that one works close to their chest. Thru trial and error and field feedback, they've since remedied the issue.

Was the Land Rover unit water cooled? If so, I'm not surprised. On those I usually sell the Bosch reman unit. Since Bosch was the OE supplier, I figure they'll probably know best how reman their own unit...

all i was saying was that those were the more recent failures that come to mind. i can remember a jeep 4.0, a toyota, and i believe a chevy tahoe having failures since i started here, but oh well. im not trying to trash napa. im just saying based on my own experience, i dont trust their electrical units.

btw, never heard of a water cooled alternator. the unit in question was a 2001 LR discovery, with a 4.0? whatever the v8 was. anywho, the first alternator we put on it fried within 6 hours. we put it on, the car sat in the shop overnight, the customer picked it up when we opened, and before the day was over, it was towed in and had alternator #2 on it. that particular alternator lasted a little longer (3 days if memory serves right), but same scenario.
