I'd second the vapor lock thing. Last summer, driving back from Vegas in a friend's van I had similar symptoms. After not sleeping for a couple days because I was both working AND playing on the strip, I wasn't thinking to clearly. After a couple of dieing episodes on the highway, the solution was still eluding me until at random I decided to open the gas cap.
