Having been down there while stationed in FL, I must say that last bridge shot is pretty dang impressive.
My roomie had a friend down in Gulf Breeze(?) who was among those who kept tally on the dump trucks during recovery.

Who would have imagined building below sea level that close to the ocean would have negative consequences.

Look no further than the Netherlands. Both areas were/are world-class seaports.

Look no further than the Netherlands. Both areas were/are world-class seaports. Have a look at the massive engineering that has gone into flood mitigation in the Netherlands, versus what was present in the low lying areas of land in the way of Katrina. Before anyone says "but that was a hurricane", the storms off the North sea adjacent to the Netherlands can be almost as severe, producing massive swells that become tsunami like as they approach land.
