Need a Spot
So i picked up this Montero last week needing something to drive for the next couple months and i've already got the bug to modify fit.

Just replaced a few items like the sway bar bushings and sway bar mounts. The tires were cracked and I ran over some nails the first day I had it so I purchased some new rims and tires today along with a roof rack I picked up from Craigslist. Not sure what else it needs but the brake lights don't work and I checked all the fuses and replaced them along with a new brake pedal sensor. Nothing works!

Did you check that they are plugged in at the actual light and also check the bulbs.

I hate to state the bleeding obvious but sometimes these things can be that simple.

I checked the bulbs everything else works... signals hazards etc. Im just going to tap into the brake light sensor switch and run it all the way back to the lights. Hopefully I can bypass anything that might have shorted out or broke or got cut inbetween.

I'm having the same problem..they show the 'stop switch' in the manual but it's just a plug. What is it's purpose? Just a connector? There's no mention of troubleshooting for this problem in the manual. Bulbs and everything is fine, brakes light up when headlights are on..

Are those GenII headlights? Nice looking truck.

Try a salvage yard for a hazard switch and a stoplight switch. Also make sure nobody before you butchered the wiring to use trailer lights.

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

Yes they are Gen II headlights retrofitted into the gen I buckets.

Is it normal that when the hazards are on only the left signal indicator flashes?

I replaced the stop light switch with a new one already. When I went to test the circuit the AC Fan came on which was weird. I will have to trouble shoot some more in the AM.

my hazzard switch would only blink one side when it wasn't working right. It also caused the brake lights not to work. what i did was back up against a wall so I can see the reflection of the brake lights. then toggled the hazzard many times to see if I could find the sweet spot where everything worked. once i found it, i knew it was the switch. I took it apart, cleaned it up, and everything has worked since. Good luck.

Nice looking ride; I wish my '89 looked that good!

Disclaimer: This is my first post attempted to help someone and I've only recently purchased a Montero and I am NOT an expert at anything electrical or auto related...

I recently worked out a no brake light/no blinker situation that went something like this (some of this was only obvious later):

*Brake lights and turn signals worked when i purchased
*played with all of the buttons
*ripped out all of interior including console and radio
*remove carpet...
*removed lighted hood ornament
*replace radio and front seats
*montero sits for two months while getting bonded title
*get title...ready to drive! no brake lights or blinkers

Check fuses/voltage as fuse box [ok]
Check voltage at bulbs [no voltage]
Check hazard switch (see diagram below)[not ok]
Clean/fix hazard switch
(Mine was actually broken and inappropriately repaired. It turns out by fiddling with the switch I broke it)
Brake lights now work.. only right blinker works
Test voltage at hazard switch (ok)
Test voltage at turn signal switch (ok)
Test voltage at mid-body connector under rear seats (NO)
Find spliced connection used for lighted hood ornament under passenger-side floorboard raceway.. fixed
All blinkers work!
*Take a break for the day
Check brake lights one more time (right brake light not ok)
WTF?
Check all voltage points again.. no power to right light at bulb/mid-point/or steering column but ok at hazard...

Turns out that if the car is off (how I was checking brake lights) but blinker is on (my right blinker was still on from previous test) the brake light does not work on that side... Once I turned off the blinker the brake lights worked again!

Hope something in here helps and good luck with the repair!

Do you mean it only shows a plug in the manual? ...or that you have a plug on the vehicle that's not connected to anything?

AllData shows that 2 wires are involved at the stop light switch. One is "0.85-GR", while the second is "0.85-G". I don't know what the "0.85" stands for (anyone?), but the first is GREEN with a RED tracer (and comes from power), while the second wire is solid GREEN (and goes to the hazard switch).

The two wires enter one of two kinds of plug at the stop light switch: The first is a 2 prong female, with the GREEN wire on the tab side, while the second is a 4 prong female with the GREEN/RED on the tab side, and the GREEN diagonally below it. The other two prongs are unused (perhaps a trailer option?).

Since the stop switch feeds the hazard switch, and the hazard feeds the turn signals (so the 3 can work together in a way that I don't get), could the turn signal switch be the culprit?
