Nice looking ride; I wish my '89 looked that good!
Disclaimer: This is my first post attempted to help someone and I've only recently purchased a Montero and I am NOT an expert at anything electrical or auto related...
I recently worked out a no brake light/no blinker situation that went something like this (some of this was only obvious later):
*Brake lights and turn signals worked when i purchased
*played with all of the buttons
*ripped out all of interior including console and radio
*remove carpet...
*removed lighted hood ornament
*replace radio and front seats
*montero sits for two months while getting bonded title
*get title...ready to drive! no brake lights or blinkers
Check fuses/voltage as fuse box [ok]
Check voltage at bulbs [no voltage]
Check hazard switch (see diagram below)[not ok]
Clean/fix hazard switch
(Mine was actually broken and inappropriately repaired. It turns out by fiddling with the switch I broke it)
Brake lights now work.. only right blinker works
Test voltage at hazard switch (ok)
Test voltage at turn signal switch (ok)
Test voltage at mid-body connector under rear seats (NO)
Find spliced connection used for lighted hood ornament under passenger-side floorboard raceway.. fixed
All blinkers work!
*Take a break for the day
Check brake lights one more time (right brake light not ok)
WTF?
Check all voltage points again.. no power to right light at bulb/mid-point/or steering column but ok at hazard...
Turns out that if the car is off (how I was checking brake lights) but blinker is on (my right blinker was still on from previous test) the brake light does not work on that side... Once I turned off the blinker the brake lights worked again!
