I admit this looks bad- very few posts from me and then I say I'm done!
A short history: bought with around 220k miles on truck (245k now)- its purpose is to go to Tahoe for snowboarding and trips to home depot and such- not a daily driver. It always had issues in the past passing smog so I ended up doing a top end rebuild- replaced the heads and fixes oil leaks and such. Biggish job, but not too hard.
About a year or so ago I replaced the distributor after it failed (would not send spark, truck would turn over, but not run)- It then later developed a hesitation- never thought it was a problem with the distributor since it was a new unit- I went thru every system check that was in the repair manual and replaced/renewed the following: Fuel pump and filter, plugs, wires, wiring harness for injectors, idle control valve, coil... even got a computer from the yard and it did not change the condition at all.
Then comes registration renewal and a Test only smog check is required. It fails- Gross polluter - which then allowed it to go into the state run repair program (I pay 100 bucks, state pays up to 500)- I take it to the best mechanic on their approved short list and he spends his time on it and tracks it down to the distributor. Puts in a new distributor and the problem does not change! I then give him my old computer and still no change. He posts the problems on his "official" mitsubishi forums and they are at a loss too. They say what is happening should no be b/c all the tests show that all the systems are working. He said that the computer tells the distributor to spark for a short duration for 5 out of the 6 times. The 6th time it just sends a ping out but no duration.
So I am not happy that it has come to this, but I have poured enough money into this truck. And it still needs a new steering box (300 bucks) to replace the loosey goosey leaking one in there now. And it still has oil leak issues and that damn metal heater hose leaks now and then.
I dont have the space now to part it out and mostly wanted to give a heads up to SF bay area guys that it will be in the yard soon.
I would love if it was just some simple fix.
I will post some pics when I get home from work.
