Getting the Wheeling Fever
Picked up engine last Sat. Looks good. Will yank the Mitsu engine this weekend and start swapping/replacing parts. Looks to be a clean swap. I'll document and post if anyone is interested?

Will do. I've had something else come up which will take me a half day Sat (at least), but I'm going to pull the mitsu engine out if I have time. I already have many of the parts that I'm going to replace, but I'd like to have the other engine sitting next to it so I can swap/replace parts at the same time.

I'll post as I go, but with work it will take a couple of weeks with gaps in-between...

I have no experience with the Hyundai engine, but the 3.0L Montero engines all have roller cams..... the early (pre-'89) Caravans did not.

The Hyundai car cams likely have the torque range a little higher on the rpm curve. To find out, check the specs on the Hyundai and see where the torque and HP peaks are and compare that info to the Montero 3.0L engine.

The Diamante heads look like the Montero heads, but have 2cc less volume in the combustion chamber..... which will result in a higher than stock compression ratio. A little higher ratio won't hurt you unless you also have the engine decks and heads machined. Then, it might put you a little higher than you want - but you won't know unless you take measurements and do the math. The Diamante cams are waaaay different than the Montero cams. They'll give you more top end, but the bottom end of the curve will suffer..... particularly with larger tires.

Roller cam Caravan heads are the same as Montero, but you'll probably have to use one longer valve cover bolt on each head. The cam sprockets on these heads are stamped, where the Montero has cast sprockets - not a show stopper.

There are lots of things to consider when changing to another engine and AFAIK, Dave is the only forum member who has compared the Hyundai engine to the Montero 3.0L.

sorry I haven't gotten back to post some of the info you asked for...I rarely get on the net lately...

on cams:
Chrysler, Mitsu "low compression engines" and Hyundai Sonata on AllDataPro and Chiltons Bibles:
valve opens BTDC 19o
valve closes ATDC 59o
overlap 39o
duration 258o

on Distributor:
bodys are interchangeable between models BUT the internal LED optical Module must match the truck's ECU.

on manifold gaskets the intake gaskets at the head are the same , the gasket between the plenum and top of manifold is different so you get a different part number.

Yes, keep you project update posted here on WIRE. I think finding hyundai motors is a good option for a cheaper and more avaiable engine, from a newer vehicle that hasn't been bogged down and worn out in a heavy truck.

Frank - I checked the specs on HP and torque on Edmunds (not sure how reliable that is), and they were the same between the Mitsu and Hyundai. So, the grind might be the same. They call for the same timing belt, also. However, I contacted a cam rebuilder, and he said the cams are different, so I'm not sure what the difference is... At this point, I think it'll work fine with the Hyundai cams...

Dave - thanks for the info. I will used the Mitsu distributor. Your info makes the cam grind look the same, also, so that's good.

I was going to pull the Mitsu engine last weekend but life got in the way so I will attempt to pull it this weekend! I want to have both engines on the ground before I do anything. Once on the ground, I'll start removing/replacing things.

Replacing the following on the Hyundai (65,000 org miles):
front main seal
rear main seal
timing belt and idler
freeze plugs (one in the back looks pretty bad)
dist. cap/rotor/wires/plugs
clutch/pressure plate/throwout bearing/pilot bearing
belts and hoses

Swapping the following from Mitsu to Hyundai:
Intake and everything above the intake
valve covers
oil pan
oil pickup tube
flywheel
exhaust manifolds
motor mounts
Front accessory brackets
Crank pulley
Distributor
Injectors*
(and probably some other stuff that I can't remember right now)

*Can anyone tell me if the injectors are the same? They are listed with different part numbers but I'm wondering if they're the same except for the e-plug? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated!

Anyway, I'll keep you guys posted and thanks for the info. Hopefully I'll have the Mitsu engine on the ground this weekend. Whether or not I'll have time to start swapping/replacing parts remains to be seen.

Oh, wanted to ask - since I'm not a paying member, is there a limit to the number of photos that I can have posted? If someone knows, please let me know...I'd like to photo document the two engines as I go along as closely as possible...

Thanks! [color:"blue"] [color:"blue"]

Hey guys, sorry things have been slow but wanted to let everyone know that I have the Mitsu engine out and will begin swapping parts this weekend.

I'll try to take as many pictures as practical and update as I go.

on the injectors,,
I had injectors in mine for awhile that were off a Sonata. They are a little shorter in hight as I recall to fit under the low profile Hyundai manifold. I think they will work fine. The engine you got has really low miles as I recall. The ohm ratings are the same.

Thanks on those injectors Dave. I'll just use the ones off the HYU then, since the miles are so low...

Stripped the HYU engine down significantly last weekend, and will pull cam gears next so I can change the back/base of the timing belt cover. Since I am doing that, I will most likely pull the pan at the same time and change the front/rear main seals along with the timing belt and tensioner and water pump. Then button the front and bottom back up. Will most likely have to at least change the pick-up tube, since the MITSU oilpan is a little deeper. I'll have to check it out when I get in there.

I got the crank pulleys and flywheel and flexplate all off. Breaking them loose was interesting. Had to make a tool for the MITSU pulley.

Be patient guys, I'll try to post some pics over the holiday weekend. Not much to photograph yet, but I'll be sure and photograph anything that is not straightforward.

Cheers.
