Hello, new here on the Mitsubishi section...
I have a 90 Mighty Max and I was wondering if anyone can tell me what engine choices that I have. I realize that the engine from the Montero will work (same generation). However, what about a newer engine? Or, a 3.0 6G72 from another application? Was it used in anything else other than the FWD Caravans, etc (it's my understanding that those motors are a little different).
Essentially, anything you can tell me will be helpful. I've looked all over the web and cannot find a good cross reference. Especially since MightyD50 got the virus, or whatever the heck happened with it.
If anyone can help or direct me with some links, I'd sure appreciate it. This Max has a rod knocking, and either a cracked head or blown head gasket. I might tear into it, but I'd like to know if other applications exist. I'm good at mechanics, so I don't mind changing manifolds, etc, but I am looking for a basic bolt-in (no fabbing mounts, etc, unless I have to).

Montero will work for a straight bolt in, but you may have to swap over your accesories and intake and injectors. An 89 has different ecu and dizzy, but is otherwise fine, and a 91 should be a direct fit. Others may chime in with other almost fits...
Mopar minivan 3.0's use a different oil filter mounting (under the motor mount in a rwd application, instead of front pside).
Welcome aboard, we have several MM/d50 folks on here...

Thanks man.
Can you or anyone tell me exactly what needs to be done to use the Dodge minivan version? Much more choices from that field, I think... Also, what years of the vans would work the "easiest?"

BUMP......
Still curious as to the differences between the Caravan SOHC, Diamante SOHC, and the MM SOHC. Is it just the oil filter location getting in the way of the motor mount? I'm assuming the intake and "intake accs" would have to be changed from one engine to another, because of the ECU. Also, maybe front accs, which is understandable. Are the flywheels the same? If I bought an engine from a Diamante (91 SOHC), and it's an auto - will the flywheel off of my engine work with that crank?
I read somewhere that a guy used a Caravan engine and all he did was use the oil filter housing from the MM engine and bolt it to to Caravan engine, after making a custom gasket. And then grind/rework driver's side motor mount a little, and bingo. Unfortunately, the article isn't that complete so I don't know. Help!

Shame you're not closer.. there's a Montero 3.0 for sale on craiglist an hour or so from me with only 76,000 miles on it for $350..

Diamante: cams ( cam timing, etc) are differennt Pistons are different( dia. has 10:1 compression, Monty is 8.9:1) Chysler: early engine has solid rockers not rollers like Mitsu. you must use Mits oil pump. This will block passages that will let oil out the chrysler oil filter mount. A 92-98 SOHC Hyundai Sonata the same long block with no modifications <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Please elaborate on the Hyundai Sonata....
Same long block? Please tell me what you can. Compression ratio on that one the same? It will run w/ the Mitsu ECU? (Assuming I change intake, etc).
Thanks alot for your help - it's tough to figure out what is what with the 3.0 - so many variations were used.
Oh, and I assume the crank is the same? In other words, if I get an engine from a car with auto, my flywheel will work from the Mitsu?

OK, I've done a bunch of leg work online at the parts houses by comparing parts numbers...
It looks like the lower end is identical, even the starter, which tells me the Mitsu flywheel can MOST likely be bolted right on to the crank, etc. The bearings (rods and mains) are the same, along with complete gasket set. The valvetrain appears to be the same, in as far as the valves, seals, guides, etc. Water pump is the same, along with exhaust manifold gasket. Ignition control module the same (so they share some of those components also). The one thing I cannot tell in the intake side of the heads - the gasket sets for the intakes call for a different part number, although it looks like, from the pictures, that both gaskets that actually meet the head are the same on both models. It's that third gasket that looks different, which would make sense. Camshaft: I cannot seem to find a parts house that lists the same mfger for each cam, so therefore I cannot compare the two. It would appear they are the same, but I'm not sure. Anybody got any advice? One place I found that sells reground cams had a chart and they listed the mitsu as "left side w/integral gear" and right side w/o integral gear". For the Hyundai they listed "left side w/integral gear - roller", and "right side w/o integral gear - roller". The part numbers are different. So, the 90 mitsu doesn't have roller rockers, and the 90-92 Hyundai does? What I'm interested in at this point is the timing and the cam gears. Sounds like the cam gears are the same, because they both use the same timing belt. However, the cams themselves sound like they might be different. Regardless, if the intake and everything above could be used from the mitsu, then I would think it might work out ok. The distributors listed use two different part numbers, but that could be an identical distributor with different e-plugs only. No way to know without mic'ing one and hoping for the best, I guess. I would think the distributor would need to be swapped for the mitsu ECU to work, but a guy might be able to just splice into the Hyundai plug? I really don't know.
Thought I'd share what I've learned and hoping someone will see this that's worked on both of these engines and/or done the swap.
