It fits... ![[Linked Image]](http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp91/nateadam_photos/Montero%20Engine%20Conversion/Front%20Axle/IMG_24772.jpg) This is using the Gen 1 brackets and crossmember. The brackets mount to the axle in exactly the same way, but the Gen 2 chassis mount points are completely different. The crossmembers are close, but the chassis mount points are a fraction of an inch different, so I used the Gen 1. The crossmember-to-axle mount points are close, but also different. I used the Gen 2 axle mount, and will find a way to attach it to the crossmember...I will probably just be lazy and weld it on. ![[Linked Image]](http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp91/nateadam_photos/Montero%20Engine%20Conversion/Front%20Axle/IMG_24762.jpg) Gen 1 Top/Gen 2 Bottom The Axle widths are the same... ![[Linked Image]](http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp91/nateadam_photos/Montero%20Engine%20Conversion/Front%20Axle/IMG_24752.jpg) Gen 1 Top/Gen 2 Bottom Covers ![[Linked Image]](http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp91/nateadam_photos/diffcovers.jpg) Gen 2 Left/Gen 1 Right ...and here is a pic to illustrate the difference between High and Low pinion diffs. ![[Linked Image]](http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp91/nateadam_photos/Montero%20Engine%20Conversion/Front%20Axle/IMG_24742.jpg) Gen1 Left/Gen2 Right I have test fit the 3.5L on top of the G2 axle, and it still fits...in fact I may not have had to modify the oil pan. I can't say for sure what 3.0L or 2.6L oil pan clearance would be like. I also am not sure how I'll use the Center Axle Disconnect. I see a few options: - Use the CAD as intended with vacuum and solenoid control
- Remove the diaphragm, and use a push-pull cable to actuate the CAD
- Physically (not electrically) wire the CAD so it is always engaged (I have manual hubs)
- I'm not sure, but willing to bet this would work: Remove the CAD internals and just use the Gen 1 stub axle
So, there's something to think about...I'm open to suggestions. I am also now on the lookout for a set of 4.90's, now that I have G2 front and rear axles.

One thing to look at is the stub axle flange(where the CV bolts on). I found the bolt pattern to be larger on the gen 2. If you swap to the gen 1 axle it should not be an issue.
Good job on this!

haha nice. i asked that question a while ago about swapping the diff. For the gen one diff i was wondering if i can connect a hose to the breather and run it up higher in the engine compartment?? or would it be better to get the gen II diff cover?

The Gen 2 cover does have a nice little fitting on it, but it's not the most amazing thing ever...you could put a hose barb on the Gen 1 cover pretty easily.

Lol, I just meant it's 6 of 1, 1/2 dozen of another. You could go to a parts yard and track down a Gen 2 cover, or go to a hardware store and get a barb. You've gotta run a length of tubing either way.

Can you post a picture of the right side axle shaft differences and disconnect parts too? Thanks for the great post!

This project has peaked my curiosity. Looking under mine last night I have a few observations/questions. It looks like the driveshaft might hit the clutch slave. Have you put the trans into its normal position , as if the engine were in , to see if slave clears. Man, not much room to work on exhaust pipes around there either. Quite a few M.S. 4.9 high pinion pumpkins out there in the yards. Hope this all works out .
