Any tips on speeding the process up of replacing the gasket? Oh, and while I'm doing that I get to replace my the roof on my house during the breaktimes, complete tearoff with new osb.

how many miles on motor? since last H.G.? sure it's not a warped head?

I would be having a good close look at your valves/seats too (full head breakdown)

There's 198,000 on the motor and probably 50,000 or so since the last head gasket. The new set doesn't come in till next Monday so I'll probably take the head in and get it checked in the meantime.

Any idea if everything has to be removed from the head for them to check it?

All they will check it with is a strait edge to make sure it's not warped and a flash light to see if light is getting through the valves. If they have to work on it they may need it stripped but they have the tools to remove the valves.

mine has 140,000 mi on the origional motor.. I bought it just under 70,000 and as far as I know, the head gasket is also origional.. still running full compression, but it's burning about a quart of oil to a take of gas <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> . I just stay in town.. I can get two weeks of travel on a tank if i'm thrifty. I'd tear it down and fix the rings now, but winter's just around the corner and I have NO money.. Just got screwed by my bank on top of it. I'd still resurface the head. It shouldn't be bad after 50k. top notch head bolts and straight heads are key. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />
Relative of mine owns two mk2 supras. It's a straight six which means the headgasket is a long one. They are prone to H.G. failures. Usually can find these on Craigslist with a blown engine and it's just a H.G. job but they are the worst to do. Toyota requires you resurace the head any time there's a H.G. Job done! Anyone who doesn't usually always has another H.G. failure within weeks. Of course, their head gaskets deal with high boost and a lead footed angry kid behind the wheel always beating that sensitive engine. anyway.. price out a resurface job. Already pulled head may not be that expensive to do and it would give you piece of mind that it's good for sure.

$50 bucks for a head resurfacing so I'm gonna take it in tomorrow if I can get it out tonight. ($90 if they have to remove the valves, but it's non-interference so that shouldn't be a problem) I'd have it back Monday which is when the parts are supposed to be in. Just need to get it done before next Thursday so I can take off for 4 days of salmon fishing.

Remember the head bolts are torque to yeild, They are only one time use. Spend the money for new bolts, if you reuse them you could be doing this again soon. I got mine from the dealer, ARP didn't have a part# for them.

Well I got it out, that was a pita, and I probably screwed up a couple hoses in the process, it was getting late and we just said f it lets get that thing out of there. Taking it in to get it resurfaced today, I'll see if they have head bolts.

All fixed, took the head in and the guy said it was cracked and not worth messing with so I stopped and bought this on the way home. Wife made me sign a card that said I couldn't put a lift on it though. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
