The cracks in the head aren't that bad. I'll post a pic if I can get a good one. I was thinking I might get it resurfaced anyway and put it together again and let my son have it and he can run it till it quits again. It was running fine before I took it apart (well fine considering) and I've already got a gasket set on the way and I have new head bolts out in the garage. The worst that could happen is it starts overheating again. In the meantime we might be able to fine a usable head somewhere.
Should I use the new head bolts or just put the old ones back in?


If the new bolts are cheap enough ($30 a set or so), use them. As noted they are torque to yield and will not tolerate being reused. You will end up needing a new head gasket sooner rather than later due to them stretching.

Maybe you could look at getting the head welded?
