Seems my clockspring has gone south. My cruise stopped working. My cute little air-bag light has lit up my dash, and then my horn stopped working.. So I have all three signals the clockspring isn't with us anymore.
Found a new MOPAR one on the eBay for $160 delivered.. So I went for it.
Seems like a fairly easy task from looking and thinking of it. My only question might be what size bolt it will take to attach the puller to the wheel? I do have an assortment, but that is here at the shop and the damn TJ is 300 miles away. So I guess I'll take a few of these and a few of those. A nightmare would be if the threads aren't SAE! I don't have MM puller bolts.
While I'm at it I'll pull the dash bezel and pull the lighter which has found it's way into the void behind the dash.
I had to purchase two aftermarket lighters to get two brackets which I will form into two WASHERS here at the shop. Then I will superglue one on each side of the now enlarged hole in the dash and install the lighter back in place.
I did install both the aftermarket fan clutch and a genuine MOPAR thermostat last week.. The damn thing still ran a bit too hot. I observed quite a lot of grass seed tops in the A/C condensor so I put a vacuume on it and the thing seemed to do well after that.. However the temp was 15* cooler that day also. So we will see!

If memory serves me correctly, the bolts are 3/8" USS thread, 3" long should work with most pullers.

On the lighter, I was thinking you had a YJ, some TJ and other later model Jeeps lighters have little tangs that snap out once the lighter is inserted from the front, that retain it in a metal sleeve that goes in first.

After looking at lighters that are for sale on eBay I find my lighter to have a plastic sleeve that fits the hole in the dash.
THAT plastic sleeve is what gave way! I was thinking the hole in the dash gave way and got larger. But that thinking seems to be incorrect. The original hole itself is larger than a replacement lighter will fit. So I ordered another stock lighter that has the plastic sleeve already on it.
I have discarded the idea of installing washers and an aftermarket lighter. INSTEAD I ordered a 20 amp toggle switch to fit into the blank space next to the fog light switch. I intend to wire that switch to an aftermarket lighter to place on the bottom of the dash. I will use THIS lighter for the purpose I was using the original one. The new original lighter shall sit there and grin and not be used much if any ever again.

Why your TJ 300 miles away? Maybe that's not a lot of distance in Texas - For me that's like abandoning my child!

Well it's like this!
The Jeep is in the thorns all the while I am on the ranch. Trying to drive it back here and then out there again next week is taking a chance of loseing a tire on the hiway..
ALSO it's a lot more comfortable driving my Z-71 at 85mph back and forth. Plus the 1/2 ton allows me to carry this and that to the ranch. Tomorrow I'll have a ladder for instance.
Not to mention I havn't put the thing into my name and it is totally without insurance and license.. Saved a bit of money there..

The clock spring was a piece of cake! Put the battery cable back on and everything went back to work.
While driving around the ranch I honked the horn every few miles just out of joy!!
$160. and an hours time and now the Jeep is back to as-new again.
