Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hieveryone!
I own a 96' rodeo 5 speed with the 3.2 l v6. I am triing to find out if another stronger more powerfull engine /isuzu or other maybe toyota's 3.4l/could be swapped in place of mine to increase the hp and the go on the truck.I am thinking of a more "simple " swap rather then a full custom job where you make any engine work.
I came across a thread about how the bellhousing /i think that is what was called/is on isuzus will fit a toyota transmission or transfer case, meaning you could pair up an isuzu engine with a lower geared toyota transmission or transfer case.Would this mean that you can pair up an isuzu transmission with a toyota engine?Iam not a mechanic but i hope i am making sense here since my knowledge and terms are limited.
I have been searching on the forum for some time now and could not find the answer. Can you guys school me on this or point me to the right direction?

thank you for anyone helping

I am not sure of the answer to your engine to bellhousing question, but a couple of quick Google searches yielded the answer that the Toyota 3.4 is rated at 190 hp and the engine in your Rodeo is rated at 194, so that swap isn't going to be of any help to you.

All of the Isuzu's are really a lot heavier than they may look. I don't want to urinate on anyone's Wheaties, but any engine swap is going to involve a lot of work, some of it fairly involved.

You might want to look at an option that improves what you have. At one time, there was a company that was importing superchargers for the 3.2. Some time with a search engine may yield some answers for you.

I am assuming that you are talking about improved performance ON road rather than OFF road.

About the only "simple" swap that I know of is another Isuzu 3.2L, 96 or 97 vintage. Even another Isuzu motor from other years will require entirely new wiring, sensors, and computers. Any other brand motor would require all of that as well as custom fabricating mounts, exhaust, etc., even if you can get the tranny to match up...more likely you would need to swap the tranny too.

And, as Jim says, the Toyota motor isn't any more powerful than the Isuzu motor you have now.

thanks for your inputs.i was out of town for a while i did not get a cnance to log in and check the responnds.
Actually i do have a toyota with the 3.4l 190 hp and it does feel a lot more powerful than my isuzu and it is a loaded t-100 truck so is not so light.I think i read somewhere that the 3.2 is around 145hp.
I do like to see improvements in power both on and off-road.
Do you think the supercharger would be a good upgrade for that?
There is an off-road race where we would like to participate in the amateur/open category and i can not decide if i should just keep my somewhat built 4x4 isuzu/which i love for being very tough and reliable and capable but hate for not having enough power to get up and go/ or should i bulid my t-100 2wd/race does not require 4x4/ because i can only keep one of them.
any and all help are appreciated

You are right in that the first 3.2s had the lower HP, but by the year of yours they had 194 HP.

It is really hard to compare across the web two very different vehicles. I suspect, but don't know for sure, that your Rodeo is still a lot heavier than the T100. You can find out the difference by running both across a scale.

Is your Rodeo running really well? What are the axle ratios of the two vehicles? There are a million different reasons that one will feel more powerful than an other.

Maybe the 3.4L has more low-end torque, that can make a motor subjectively feel more powerful.

I was thinking of the gear ratios and weight differencies but i still think that the engine is "underpowered" because even before all my modifications with stock tires had difficultiies going up on some larger longer grades. Most times i had to shift back to at least 4 th or 3rd gear to go up and keeping a steady speed/meaning not slowing down/.I know it is a heavy suv but the other truck would have no problem at 5th gear.So i am deffenitely going to look for a scale around here and check the weight and also look up the gears on them and post it up.
