Found a 96 LS with a slipped timing belt. 136000 miles. One fender and hood don't match. Dirty as sin. The lot had a hack replace the fuel pump because it didn't start. The fool dropped the tank, trashed the level sender in the process. The look on his face made my day when I showed him the access plate.

I traded a Mazda mini van and got $600 cash to boot.

I also have a new job as a car lot mechanic if I want it. Which is good because my California job is dieing a slow death.

So here's one to all the sick, twisted freaks that share this illness we call Montero

I suppose it is cheaper than hanging around in bars, but not by much. Way cheaper than the Bunny Ranch or illegally derived plant based substances.

Looking this thing over, I don't think it ever had any service done to it. $600 - $700 for parts depending on how many valves are bent. Everything I've found so far says it's an interference engine.

With the crank on the mark, the cams are 5 to 6 teeth off. I'm thinking that's not a good thing.

Have you had a chance to retime the motor real fast and do a compression check? You may just get really lucky...

It's an interference engine. Gates belts has a good web page for this.

Monteros are hands down the best rig for the buck. The fact that they happen to be better than most rigs is a bonus.

Congratulations on another great decision.

Bent valves, no problem.

Crank bolt was loose, the sprocket key is damaged, crank sprocket beat on the crank snout. The crank sensor also got wiped out, trigger ring is toast. The threads seem OK.

I have a spare 3.5 sprocket but the trigger ring is different. The good sprocket is a bit loose w/o the key in place. Lock-Tite may save the day. Not in the mood to do a crank replacement. At least crank shafts for the 3.0 are cheap and plentiful compared to the 3.5.

Thinking the Bunny Ranch might be more fun right about now.
