not sure about the t-stats, but for the elec fan, most are dual polarity, so if you swap the +- wires, the fan blows in the opposite direction. you might want to check and see if someone wired yours up wrong. I would think the only deflection of air would be to the sides of the fan. if you put your hand in the middle (but not in it:)) I would think it should be pretty easy to tell which way the air is blowing.
