mounting blitz gas can? #1011277 10/19/10 03:18 AM

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I'm beginning a new project of purchasing/fabricating a mount for my Blitz gas can.

The easiest solution is to stick it on my roof rack, but I'm hesitating putting it there for "top heavy" reasons. The mount made by my rack company (BajaRack) are nice, but I'm looking for other options.

The next idea is to attach a bracket to the existing spare tire mount that the Blitz carrier can bolt up to. Here I'm worried about the weight on the door as well as the tire mount. This would be a clean, easy solution as well, with the above cons. I saw FrankR's set up when I searched this in the archives. If you see this post, I'd like to ask how everything is holding up.
Did you modify the hinges or OEM spare tire mount?

The final, most expensive, idea is to fabricate a rear bumper with swing-away bits to receive the gas cans (since no aftermarket product is made for my Gen III).

Suggestions, ideas, opinions, pics of your rigs with gas can attachments welcomed.

No factory gas can holder that I've ever seen.

One company makes a rear bumper...Opposite Lock out of Australia. You can also check with Icysyrup on this board...he has built several custom rear bumpers for GenIII's.

Thanks fellas!

Before posting this, I did a search and so most of the posts that pertained to the information I was looking for were covered...

I'm still wondering how rigs are handling the extra weight on the tire carrier and/or rear door.

I like the swing-away gas can attachment! Nice compromise to an entire bumper.

Well, it is an OEM Mitsubishi product so that tells me the body is most likely built to handle the option and its resultant added weight.

Edit whups misread your question LOL.

That said, I know Carlos carries a 37x14" goodyear mudder on his door. It does pull the door top away from the body but not enough that it leaks in heavy rain or anything.

I believe someone already mentioned in the thread the doors have no issues holding the extra weight. Ibelieve someone had a 33 or 35 spare on a steel wheel and a jerry can and had no issues.

I'm leaning towards mounting the can on the spare tire carrier.
I think I can fabricate something to work with the stock rim hole on my spare.
I can fit two inch tubular stock through it , but I'm not sure what thickness I should be looking for. The tubular would be welded between two plates, one that bolts to the tire carrier (sandwiched between the rim and mount), the other is the attachment for the blitz carrier.

I'm still rolling this around in my head, trying to come up with the best situation for life of the Monty. Thanks for the help.
