On my '94 pickup 22re. After getting the plenum off I noticed what seemed like gas, oil, and coolant mixing together and making a mess of things inside it and the intake manifold. Make any sense? I'm trying to figure out how it ended up like that. I'll finish the tear-down tomorrow and maybe have something to add. BTW, there is no coolant in the oil.

Also, when I depresserized the fuel lines by running the engine and disconnecting power at the fuel pump I noticed that the engine killed pretty much immediately upon having made the disconnection. I expected it to run for a few seconds. Is this normal?

The fuel pressure for the EFI is a lot higher than for a carbie, so it probably evacuated pretty fast.

It'll be interesting to see if the HG is egged out or not.

You're probably going to want to drop and clean your oil pan. The boss that the plug is mounted in sits up about a 1/2" or so; can't get it completely clean. Change the filter too.

Just curious...what made you think the HG was blown?

Speaking for myself, it's always been a leak on the exhaust valve side, pushing exhaust into the water journal, thereby super-heating the coolant and over-heating the truck.

Yes, I think it was the same for me. I confirmed it with the chemical kit from NAPA. And, yes, the coolant system was being pressurized.

You are lucky that it's just the gasket. I had the same exhaust in the cooling system prob as well. Needed a different block!!

Today I got the head off and into the machine shop for cleaning and resurfacing. I was in such a hurry I had no time to really look at things. There's quite a bit of oil on the top of the block, especially in and around the #4 cylinder. I will clean it up tomorrow to better evaluate things. I'm praying the block is okay 'cause I don't have the money to do a complete rebuild right now.

Well, this is going slower than I had planned due to other things coming up. I will start reassembly tomorrow. I got everything cleaned today. The old HG didn't look terrible; no obvious rips, tears, or blow-outs. Of course, it did fail, so I'm not saying it was perfect. The block looked good, thankfully. Sorry, no pictures.

I took the cooling fan clutch apart, and it was definitely low on silicone oil. So, I put some STP oil treatment in there. Believe it or not, the local Toyota parts guy suggested that since he said there was no other silicone oil readily available anywhere in the country. Anyway, I hope I didn't overdo it 'cause I filled it pretty full.

Yep oil filter if coolant got in there. Glad the block is okay.
