For the last 15 years on or around halloween I drop rotten pumpkins off the roof of my school to duplicate galileos famous gravity experiment. Its fun, its messy, and the rotten pumpkin shrapnel is hysterical, but I digress, My tailgate has not been always staying closed, and the mechanism has been "sticky" last night I gave it a good slam, and heard stuff fall down in the tailgate. I gave it a tug, it was shut and I went to work. At work I went to open the back, and discovered it no longer opens, locked shut. I opened the whole thing up and found that the stamped metal piece that pivots is now free hanging, and it no longer works from the outside handle... Is this a simple one part order or am I on the hook for the whole assembly?

Pop by the dealer and ask to look at the parts breakdown. I do that all the time. toydiy.com used to have the ECPs available, but they got konked on the head to cease and desist.

You can still git the piccies...by following the instructions on the parts reference page.

It sounds like the "L" pivot bracket is from the tailgate handle. You can git the handle assembly at the dealership or off of eBay, craigslist, etc...

I've found that the chrome one from the 1993/94 T-100 trucks seem to hold up better than the black one that was on my 1998 T-100 SR5. Not sure why Toyota didn't use a chrome one on the tailgate fer the SR5 like they did in 1993.

From my 1998 T-100 xtra cab listing...
69090B HANDLE ASSY, TAIL GATE
69090-34010 VCK11, 21; RCK10, VCK10, 20..STD 1 $99.04

From my 1993 T-100 reg cab listing...
69090B HANDLE ASSY, TAIL GATE
69090-34020 VCK10, 20..SR5 1 $107.91

Using www.toyotapartsales.com with those part numbers...

Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
6909034010 $97.69 $0.00 $70.48
Tail gate - Gate and hardware - Handle - Painted
Painted 1993 - 1998

Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
6909034020 $110.15 $0.00 $79.46
Tail gate - Gate and hardware - Handle - Chrome
Chrome 1993 - 1998

You can contact ToyotaPartsMan (Gary Smith-Parts Manager at Toyota of Newman) from ToyotaNation as he sells at 30% off of MSRP and will ship fer exact costs plus a couple dollars fer materials.

You might even be able to bolt the pivot back on as well...

Body Damage is Cool
What Bam said.

Apples and oranges, but when my d/s window gave out, it was just bolts needing to be reattached. Similar sounding bracketry arrangement, I guess, brings it to mind - half a dozen or so lighter-weight pieces put together with 10-12mm bolts?

I bet you can cobble it back together without having to search too hard for parts.
