I saw a post on another wheeling board that is local to the Northwest. A guy was trying to move a .300 Win Mag. It was and is an older Voere, which at the point it was made was a German company. They made several lines of fairly high quality rifles both under their own name and private labels. From what I have found researching the brand, they compared favorably with Weatherby in terms of quality, accuracy and price.
He was asking too much for the rifle but also indicated that he was open to trades. I offered him a package deal of a Ruger 10/22 and a Ruger Standard Auto in a straight across trade. He jumped at the offer. I had bought both the .22s in 1970 and had used them very, very little. The pictures he sent of the Voere indicate that it is in the same sort of condition.
I am meeting him at a location midway between our two homes tomorrow morning.

Interesting. I recently picked up a Henry lever action chambered for .357. Nice feel to it.

I picked up the rifle last weekend. The action and barrel are in excellent condition. I am nearly through with refinishing the stock and have ordered the stuff to fix some spots on the bluing. The PO through in 39 rounds of ammo so when I get it all finished I will find out if I can hit anything.
A friend today offered me an old Mauser (for free) which will need restocking. Who says that you have nothing to do in ones retirement?

Where are you finding the time for gun stock refinishing????
I can't find the time to go out shooting, let alone clean a gun!!!!!
And, I have been "retired" 7 years!!!!

But I don't spend all the time that you do on Land Use issues that you do.

I like Voere's, but that 10/22 could be outfitted into a small caliber assault rifle, with mega magazines, and if you make a mistake and disable the sear disconnect, a full auto one. I guess a 300mag can do some damage, too, and further away.
I love Mauser actions. The '03-A3 Springfield used one, royalties paid to Mauser, at least until 1917...
Not responsible for advice not taken...

One of the things on my bucket list was to do some big game hunting. I have done a fair amount of upland game hunting over the years, but never seriously done the big game thing.
Also, I really am not into the shooting range thing, either at an established or an impromptu range. The 10/22 has sat in the gun locker for years without being used. I live in a part of the country where there are seasons for deer (blacktail, whitetail, and muley) as well as elk and bear. The .300 Win Mag is a bit big for the blacktails, but with the right bullets will work fine for everything else.
