Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey all, I'm broke down right now waiting for a tow truck, I think my clutch finally gave out. My throwout bearing has always produced a knocking sound but over the last week it has become violent and tonight I was unable to put it in fifth gear without the knocking becoming unbearable. If I stayed on the gas it would quiet down but once I laid off the gas it would come back extremely violent, to the point where it was painfully obvious that something was very wrong. After I got off work and drove a few feet, the car slipped out of gear and I was unable to out it in gear. If I pumped the clutch violently it would seem to knock it back in place and I could drive a couple blocks but when I had to lay off gas and downshift or start from stop it gave up. Does it sound like my clutch is just going or something else? When my clutch went out in my ranger it was nothing like this. The clutch doesn't appear to be slipping at all on the montero, just mechanically faulty. How difficult is it to replace the clutch? And how many hours labor ? I have found the clutch kit online for 165, just trying to determine how much labor/

agree, essentially the way my first trans died.

If the noise is while your foot is depressing the clutch, probably the throw-out bearing. If the noise is when your foot is off the clutch its most likely a bearing in the transmission.

Thanks for the response guys, it was the tranny all along, since the day I picked her up that knocking has always been there, I just thought it was the throwout bearing. My buddy has a shop near russels montero ranch and I picked up his spare 87 tranny hopefully it's in good enough shape! Pulled the tranny in my truck today and ordered a new clutch, the original Was toast. Id say nearly thirty years, it was time for a replacement. Hopefully my Monty will be back on the street by Thursday. Praying to the mitsu gods ! Thanks Russell!
