Mechanic told me Castrol 15W40, owners manual says 10W30.
I am going to put Shell Rotella T5 10W30 (semisynthetic).

What do you guys think/use in your trucks?

Thanks <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

I use the Rotella T SB 0W-40 100% Synthetic if I do the change, Amsoil if I'm travelling and stop in at my cousin's lube shop (I get a wicked deal from him.)

IMHO a 15W40 oil is too thick for winter, out here on the prairie anyway.

I run 15W40 amsoil synthetic in the summer and 5W40 liqui-moly in the winter, its seemed to work good for me. I had 15W40 for part of a winter and it didn't mind it at all.

Yup, I'm with these guys... and of course it depends on conditions and temp. Towing in the summer, I use 15w. Winter I start with 5w and go down to 0w later in the winter. Rotella every time.

Because in Japan the temperature range never goes below 0C, or above 30C.

That is true for Tokyo but temperature in North could be snowy (Sapporo and Nagano winter Olympic games) and cold down to minus 8C. http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2273.html

Also working temperature for 10W30 is from minus 20C to plus 30C (as far as I remember).

I think owners manual is generic for all Pajero though my current Pajero is for "Northern Territories" (double batteries, no sun-roof, heater in the trunk, front wipers heater)

I think it's more important to think about what the truck will be doing. I don't disagree with the engineers, but the trucks aren't new anymore either...

The engineers didn't have towing a 3000# trailer up Roger's Pass in mind when they built my truck. But I had it in mind when I bought it. They also didn't have Moab in mind. But I did. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Stock tires were 31s, so I've already changed shift parameters, RPM range, etc, so the conditions the truck was built for are gone out the window. The manual probably also doesn't spec synthetic oil, but that doesn't mean it's a bad idea... You see where I'm going with this?

They are trying to recommend an oil that is good under most average conditions, most of the time. And I'd agree with that. But if you want to get specific with your conditions and your times, then I see nothing wrong with switching it up to suit...

My 2 cents is not equal to Mitsu engineer's design parameters, obviously...

Thanks PHIL,

I've got your point. I use truck for city driving and occasionally up to the mountains' tops in the winter.

There is no towing in the plans so far...

Also here

http://www.worldsbestoil.ca/which-30-weight-oil.php

says:"Although a vehicle that is recommended to use a 30 weight oil can also use a 40 weight oil, it is usually not needed. You will gain absolutely no benefit from using a thicker viscosity oil if it is not needed. The only time we recommend a 40 weight oil, such as AMSOIL's 10W-40, to a customer in a passenger car or light truck application is if the vehicle's engine is excessively worn and consumes oil at a higher than normal rate or if the vehicle is being used for very severe duty, high load, high temperature applications."
