I am thinking on a new engine I know where a .30 over 2.6 is but I am fighting the urge to go with a 4.3 for a little more power is it worth trying or just build the 2.6

1987 Dodge Ram 50
2.6 5 speed
2 inch body lift 31x11.50 Swamper LTBs
4.62 gears lsd rear and welded front with lockouts
Weber carb waiting to be installed

IIRC, Baldy has a V8 in his. No major swap is easy. But, with determination, proper planning, creativity and plenty of cash, it's a snap <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

If you want something easier to swap in 2.4 out of a 90's mighty max is pretty much a bolt on and you get mpi out of it and its lighter and spec'd with more power than the 2.6. I wired up the 2.4 in toasty's 94 montero he was missing part of the harness so if you had a donor it would be even easier cause you'd have the whole shot. just make sure its the wide block 2.4

Does the 2.4 bolt up to the 5 speed and or the auto for the 2.6 and or the 3.0?

Yes it bolts up to the 2.6 5 speed and auto trannys and if your v6 has the km148 or aw2 it will bolt to that with a bellhousing swap from a 2.6 auto tranny thats what we did with toastys. the important thing to look for is making sure its a wide block, if i remember correctly all the 2.4 maxes with a 5 speed are wide and the auto tranny max/d50 trucks are narrow. The early 2.4's use a 6 bolt crank like the 2.6 and you can swap your flexplate over from your auto tranny engine but later 2.4s are 7 bolt cranks and you'll need to order a flexplate from the dealer thats what we did for toasty's 2.4 as it came out of a 94 max.
If anyone is swapping into a montero there are some other stuff that needs to be done if you are interested in knowing let me or toasty know.
