Yes, BUT...

Those 2 blocks are 2 different critters.

The engine will bolt up to the motor mounts, transmission will bolt up just fine as well. It must be that the engine, and matching head that you use. You cannot use 1979-1984 22R parts (like head, timing kit, etc) on a 1985-1995 22R engine. Internally, the guts are the same, but you'll need to use the exhaust and intake manifolds from the 81 for your 87. Just need to keep in mind for future maintenance.

>>>*Staceman is correct, it's a "Yes, but...". We run into that nearly every week early engines in later model vehicles.

Of course the older engines hit the yards first and then became replacements as later vehicles began to develop problems. Lots of 20R engines and even imported 21R engines are running around in later model vehicles.

A few wiring changes, hookups, the manifold concerns is all there is to converting.

Internally the engines are almost completely different, although the connecting rod bearings, crankshaft and rods interchange. So do the cams, valves, springs, but that's about it.

They will run and go, you give up some power and efficiency but when the budget is short, it works just fine....*EB
