I have gloves for a lot of things. But, I've never had any mechanics gloves. I decided I need a pair of gloves after I went to the ER to get 5 stitches in my thumb.

So, who wears gloves? What brands or features should I look for? TIA

That's pretty funny.

I usually wear nitrile gloves when working on the engine/drivetrain. I don't normally want to wear leather/cloth gloves due to the added bulk and the ease which can snag on the rig. However, if the area I'll be working on has sharp stuff, I will wear a cheapo set of leather/cloth gloves I bought at HD/Lowes/Ace/OSH. I also have a comfy pair of tan leather work gloves (3 pack @ costco) I occasionally wear if I need even more protection.

Mechanix Black Stealth in XXL for heavier stuff. SAS Thickster for light but dirty stuff. No pics of the gore???

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

Mechanix gloves I've found work well for man handling blocks, heads, etc. But I've yet to find a pair that I can have a delicate enough sense of touch for fine work and wont hold oil like a soggy rag.

There are several options out there for cut-resistant gloves - nitrile isnt one of them - but I do like these for some more of the delicate work. Biggest con is your hands will sweat like crazy.

The specialty cut resistant glvoes can be had at sites like Grainger, Lab Safety, even Amazon and most other industrial MRO & lab supply outfits.

As with most things, it's all down to personal preference.

The big thing is get what fits your hand well. i have a pair of stanley gloves that was given to me and bought 2 different pairs from harbor freight. they are pretty good. little too thick of material at the finger tips.

For the heavier jobs normally under the truck or engine work thats not delicate I have a set of the Mechanix gloves hazy mentioned. For delicate work where dexterity is a must I have blue nitril gloves by the box full. Double up on them if something might poke through them. I also have a pair of cold weather gloves which is mostly for handling tools in the middle of winter and shoveling snow. The worst part of having gloves is its first virgin dip into a pond of oil or coolant.

im bad about glvoes at home, but usually some nitrile when im getting dirty, sometimes I use the mechanics gloves we get from apm, but only when im not getting all fancy., and when I know there is gonna be a knuckle buster I toss on a pair of leather over layer with a kevlar under layer. They are nice and thick, saved the hands.

cut finger gloves over nitrile if it's greasy. Still have touch, most of the most vulnerable areas are covered up.

I just use Birthday Brand gloves, they self-heal and there's no loss of feeling.

On a serious note, I only wear gloves if it's cold, there's thin gauge sheet involved, or it's paint/caustic. I do however go through shop rags and wipe-alls at an alarming rate...
