My harmonic balancer just came off my '91 3.0 Montero. There is a pool of oil collected on the skid plate below, what is my next step tp get this thing back on the road?

you should check the tech posting at the top of this section, but it sounds like your HB bolt broke or fell out. maybe this thread will help link

To give you a little more info, it happened 5ish miles from home and it was easily drivable with no weird noises. Other than it wasn't turning any of the normal pulleys (no pw steer, no alternator etc), you couldn't really tell there was anything wrong. Something fell out at the intersection (crank bolt?) but I did not want to stop and check as I had the Mrs. and the little one with me and wanted to get them home.

do you have any pics? it's hard to speculate, but if your HB came off, you are going to want to check it for damage where it comes in contact with the oil seal. You will also want to check your seal to make sure it isn't damaged. If you don't have the bolt, you will have to get the new one. you should also check to see if the key is still in the crank. you can also download the FSM(factor service manual) and it should be able to tell you what you need. mitsubishilinks.com will have it.

This one is also referenced in the FAX for crank bolt (mainly the updated part numbers): http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showflat.p...;gonew=1#UNREAD <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Well the picture has become clearer. I went back to where I heard "something fall?" through the engine compartment at an intersection at the same time the HB came off. It was the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer (it was like frogger grabbing those those out of the road). Worse part is bolt was snapped off with only about 1/4in of threads remaining. Is it junk yard time? I do not have anywhere to start tearing this motor down and although the link provided earlier in this post does look like a solid fix, the motor already has 150K+ on it and has been using oil. Now the question is, has the oil just been leaking out the front cover where I noticed a pool of oil on the top of the skid plate? I don't know, anywhere near Indiana need a project Mitsu?

Some on here have had sucess with a left hand drill bit and an easyout to remove the old bolt. It's gotta be on here somewhere. Mine leaked oil simply from all the off balance vibration of the lose balancer. The oil seal is a simple fix. I alway change a seal when I do the timing belt anyway. How much oil are you useing? These engine have a strong bottom end. At 150K you probably have some wear in the valve guides and seals. I wouldn't junk it just for that.

I found a few on here that have been successful w/ lh drill bits and just stepping up the size until, voila!! It will just twist right out. I think I will have to try that if I can determine if my threads are good enough to reuse. Thanks for the direction guys, I did some searching but was not getting any useful hits. I was using the wrong search terms I suppose.
