Body Damage is Cool
My new-er 87 runner's motor is tired...I'm only getting about 17MPG right now, got almost 250K on it.

The wrecked truck's motor is much fresher...new EB head, RV cam, ect, and only 145K.

I am planning on pulling the motors on both and putting the fresher motor in the new-er truck.

I am assuming this should be relatively simple. Anything I should look out for? Do I need to take the top end off? I was thinking I could just undo the wiring and unbolt the tranny. What else?

TIA

J

I'd do a complete clutch job while it's apart. Resurface the flywheel and all. -- Matt

To add, pull the oil pan and clean the junk out of the bottom, as the oil drain plug boss sits up about 1" above the bottom of the pan, so you never completely drain the darn thing. This is also a good practice if you're picking up an engine you know nothing about.

Consider sending the fuel and CS injectors off for a refurbishing; on the fuel injector splices, remove the butt splices and solder the connections. We know this is a trouble area with the older Toys.

Yeah, you should be able to feed the ECU plug thru the firewall into the fender skirt area and pop out thru the fender for the swing. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Yep remove ECU and wires, pull through firewall, remove engine mount bolts, take off rad fan and rad, hood, clutch line, wiring going to the body, hoses, and rip er' out.

I'd replace the cam chain tentioner with a new EB unit.
Maybe the chain and gears depending on their condition.

The clutch is a great idea, throwout bearing is a must.
If you pull the pan then new mains to keep up the oil pressure. I think that reasonable covers everything.
