I recently acquired a set of 245/75R16 goodyear wranglers with only abour 5K kms on them and would like to put them on my 1991 pajero for winter/ fall offroad use. The overall tire height for these goodyears is about the same as the 31.5 inch (15 inch rims) all season street tires on it now. Are there rims out there with the mitsu 6 bolt pattern? ( I saw toyota rims on a pickup that at a quick glance seem like they would fit). Is the swap feasible and is there anything I should look out for? Are there reasonably priced wheel suppliers out there?

all advice gratefully accepted

If you can get the American Racing brand up there they make a few model rims that fit the Montero. Usually the older model Chevy rims are a straight bolt on from what I see.

The lug bolt pattern (non metric size) is 6x5.5".

The thing about gen I Montero's is their center hub diameter is pretty big (I recall there was a measurement somewhere) so many that would otherwise fit may not. It's best to check that before you buy them.

I know on mine all the aftermarket aluminum rims have been a very tight fit and some that looked like they'd fit did not fit at all without some Dremel work to clearance the hole.

Also, I've found a very tight fit for lug wrenches into the lug bolt holes in aluminum rims. Have had to resort to using a very thin walled socket with a ratcheting wrench versus an air gun to remove the wheel lug bolts/nuts.

6 lug jeep wagoneer

You should be able to get some used for cheap, I bought a set of 15" rims off craigslist for $150.

Isuzu and Nissan wheels will require grinding. Late model 1/2-ton Chevy are hub-centric, not lug-centric. Toyota wheels will clear the Mitsu hub without issue. The 6-lug Wagoneer and Cherokee wheels were made by the same manufacturer as Chevy/GMC and the hub is too small, needs the grinding again. This is all addressing stock, factory wheel types.

Aftermarket rims will have to be checked now, due to the hub-centric market. Just get some Mitsu 16" wheels and be done, no problem. The Montero Sport and Gen II.5 both were equipped with 15" or 16" wheels, depending upon the trim level. The Gen III wheels are hub-centric and would have to be clearanced.

FYI, Toyota wheels are generally deeper backspacing and will narrow up the wheel track. (In my experience.)

I bought a set of 16x7 Toyota Tacoma steel wheels off Craig's List, and mounted some Sumitomo 265/70 AT tires on them. The comments about lugs on alloy wheels and hub openings are spot on. Other wheels might have the same bolt pattern, but the hub opening will be too small for a Gen I Monty. The Toyota Tacoma wheels fit PERFECTLY on my '89 SWB. Measure the diameter of your hubs, then ask how large is the center opening on the wheels you're thinking of getting, and you'll be surprised at how many wheels have a center opening that's too small. I think older Chevys have the same 6-lug pattern, but the center opening is too small. The Tacoma steelies work great. Not the prettiest steel wheels around, but maybe you can find a set of Tacoma or Landcruiser alloys for cheap?

Center hole must be 4 1/8" to fit over the autohubs. Older chevys had that large a hole, say 87 and older. LC's had the same, and I've used Toyota wheels several times.

I bought a set of wheels (American Eagle Type 54's) that were from a 4wd Tacoma. Unfortunately they wouldn't fit the Montero w/out some grinding to make them just a bit wider so not all rims that fit Toyota's will fit Montero's.

Perhaps 4runner and landcruiser hubs are slightly bigger?

Just double-check before you buy. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Yeah, what he said! Measure the outside diameter of your front hubs, or the inside center opening on your spare wheel, should be the same. With that measurement, along with the bolt pattern, you should be able to figure out what aftermarket or wheels from another manufacturer will fit. Just went out and measured the center opening on my factory spare steel wheel, and it's 4.25" / 107mm.

I know this is a little OT, but what is the minimum backspacing required to run wider tires? my friend wants to grab a set of steelies for his raider but needs to know the required backspacing to run 33x12.5
