Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey all. ive got a 88 raider, 2.6L, 5 speed, that burns quite the bit of oil. Any common issues? im hoping its something easy like valve seals...but figure its probably rings.

Valve seals commonly go bad. The jet valve o ring can go bad and leak oil as well. When is it smoking, all the time, real bad on start up? only when it's warmed up?

All the time, which led me to think it would be rings. Usually valve seals are only on startup/deceleration when theres a negative vaccume in my experience. Its bad enough that i have the valve cover vaccume hose disconnected from the intake because that makes the motor sputter. its just pointed straight down (right at my alternator...which is a pretty bad idea,gotta reroute that). Ive got little to no knowledge about carbbed engines, never mind 22 year old motors, so any assistance would be appreciated. what is the jet valve o ring and where is it located? difficult to change? Is it something that can be changed with a generic o-ring when matched up?

::EDIT::
i found this image of what the head looks like (at least i hope), i see where it says where the jet is, but doesnt list a o-ring for it. where is the 0-ring located?
[Linked Image]

::EDIT 2::
found a image of the jets themselves

im assuming that after i take off the valve cover, i can just unbolt the rocker arms then unbolt the jets, change out the 0-rings, throw it all back in, make sure the valve lash is good, and it should be good to go?

I'd get a jet valve elimination kit and call it a day.

what does the kit consist of, how much is it, and wheres the best place to get it in canada? is it basically just a bolt with some sealant on the threads?

JV elim part is a bolt thing that seals with an oring. Try machine shops, or here.

hmm...30 bucks shipped for the delete kit...pretty cheap, but going to the bolt store and getting some bolts there is cheaper. ill try replacing it with regular bolts and a sealant and see what happens, if it worsens or just plain doesnt help at all, ill buy the kit. This is a offroad project that will see no road at all, and i dont plan on spending too much money at all on it. If the motor becomes an issue, ill put something else in there that has a little more power.

I'm not an expert, but I think the jet valves see combustion chamber pressure. Make sure your bolts and sealant are up to the task.

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

i would assume that they would be exposed to combustion chamber pressure. im sure grade 10.9 bolts and RTV gasket maker should do it.

they are not just a bolt, its a machined plug basically with a o ring seal. You wont be able to seal them without the plug. Dont be a cheap ass and get them or just replace the jet valve o rings. If you dont want to use the jet valves just cut the jet valve portion of the rockers off. Eliminated the cheap way.
