Hi again. Hmmmm? what will these things cruse at on the highway, what does yours do? I have seen top speeds at 90 and 95, speedometer looks like 125 mph, is that just for show? What would a 89 V-6 5 speed be expected to do on the highway? Thanks again....

What would a 89 V-6 5 speed be expected to do on the highway? Thanks again.... Hmmm 3rd post and you're asking how fast can you go? How old are you? I'm not proud of it but I've driven well over the limit (115mph) with my old 90 4 door v6 auto. Cop pulled me right over. He was impressed it could move that fast but I had to talk myself out of going to Jail. Is that what you're hoping to do? That said, most speedo's show speeds greater than what the vehicle is safely capable of driving. Most driver's reaction times, skills, and their vehicles are not set up for those kinds of speeds. Someone driving at 90-95 is more than fast enough and driving fast in them is definitely not encouraged and is actually frowned upon unless you're off road or on a race course where nobody else can get hurt or will have to pay for someone else's stupidity. OK, I'm off my soapbox now. Yes they can drive faster than 90-95. Have you done a good old tune up recently? Perhaps your air filter has some blockage not allowing the full volume of air it's capable of filtering into the engine? Speaking of the engine what condition is it in besides plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor & air filter? Perhaps one of the pistons isn't at full compression? Wouldn't be surprising with your vehicle's mileage that it may need some additional TLC depending on the prior owner(s).

Mine never went faster after the snorkel install. It does however seem to run much better. Makes sense as its no longer pulling in hot under hood air at low speeds on the trail and the filter lasts longer as well. It wont pull all the dust out of the fender as you drive down dusty roads.
Hope this helps.
Eric Wegerich 89 Montero as chopped as can be. Now with 5.29's

LOL, Yep. Snorkels are cooler!
Wll, I use to race auto cross and did rallies long, long ago. I drive the legal limit, sometimes fudge a little, about 72 on the interstate is fast enough for me. The question was really about power to pass, I do pass.
I'm retired now, pushing 60, nothing wrong with my reaction time yet, but probably not what it was at 22-26 while racing. I am an aggresive driver and enjoy taking the curves but not beyond the limit of the vehicle. Saw a video of an 89 on a beach I think cutting donuts, looked like pretty sharp turns and was surprised he didn't roll it! Pavement would have been a different story.
I'd like to build up a good car, reliable and with capabilities to do some off road travels. I'm considering going cross country and hitting all sorts of terrain. I'm not going to abuse the car or rock crawl.
I do storm chasing and spotting, so it needs to be reliable and quick enough to get out of the way.
I'm trying to figure out if the 89 Raider is a good starting point for a build and long term keeper. I am concerned with the electronics, computerized end, rather have an simple coil/plugs/distributor....I'm older, lol.
I saw where the Raider ran in the 11s on the 1/4 mile, not blazing speed but good enough, just wondered about kicking it in to pass and get out of the way. Thanks

I think most are hoping they can afford to retire at 65 and unsure how they'll make ends meet. As for taking curves, I've found I prefer the handling after putting larger wider tires on her but then it's a compromise because you loose out from a gearing standpoint unless you can find 4.90's or better yet 5.29's to put under her. That said, I recommend running 30" or better yet 31x10.5 tires. I'd like to build up a good car, reliable and with capabilities to do some off road travels. I'm considering going cross country and hitting all sorts of terrain. I'm not going to abuse the car or rock crawl. Built up mildly with bigger tires a locker and armor it's actually a fairly capable rock crawler but for your needs, an LSD, bigger tires and better shocks (read KYB Gas-Adjust) are all you should need. For the engine, check the oil consumption, the radiator (rod it if necessary) and make sure the belts/water pump are replaced regularly and you should be all set. I do storm chasing and spotting, so it needs to be reliable and quick enough to get out of the way.

Thanks With an automatic tranny, I simply use the Overdrive as necessary to pass but I also realize it won't win too many races. Simply too heavy/robust a rig. For the electronics, I'd check the local salvage yard for a spare ECU (Engine Control Unit aka computer) and ISC/IAC (idle speed controller/idle air controller) servo or find a bad ISC and have it rebuilt. Cost for a new ISC is ~$150. Haven't seen sources for a new ECU though. HTH.

THANKS!!!
I was thinking of the 31/10.5/15, went to the local shop and they looked at me like I was nuts and said 16s was the smallest they carried. I just put 15s on my Ford F-150 (too nice a turck to take out in the woods!).
So, tires are first on the list. Thinking plans are:
A snorkel because I do like water and we have rivers to cross. Roof rack, beefy bumper, rack on back for cans, dual battery set up, racing seats, custom dash with GPS and HAM radio gear, and steering wheel, trailer hitch (for small all steel trailer/or boat), fender flares/rubber, K&B filter, gas shocks and some decent lights.
I'd like to add some door panels with storage trays (I'll make them) I'm taking everything out and using spray foam to insulate the interior cavities, warmer/cooler and sound, and spraying inside with bedliner coating, wire it for aux. equipment. Build in an inverted. I also make a nice overhead console cutting down PVC guttering material for radios, lights and switches (it gets upholstered). I alos want a floor console similar to the Land ROver Defender box, and I have an air compressor to build in as well.
That's the plan. So, it's alot for me to do all that in any vehicle, So I sure don't want to go down that road only to find I started out with the wrong vehicle!
What do you think?

Your local shop is loosing it. 16s are fine if you already have 16" rims, but 15s are available. Just may have to order them is all. No big deal. If they still give you a hard time, tell them you'll just order them from Tire Rack and get them mounted at the local gas station. that will likely get their butts working for you.
For a snorkel, ARB sells one as do other sources (ebay check for rexypow). I have a rexypow fiberglass ARB clone on my 96. Works fine. Others prefer the plastic ARB because it can bend when compressed. To each their own. I like the ability to patch up mine if I need to. Tough to do that with the plastic models.
For a roof rack there are plenty of options (Surco, Yakima/Thule, etc.) ranging from inexpensive to $$$$.
For bumpers check with Justice on this forum (I think I posted his info in the FAQ thread above)
Interested to see what you come up with on the dash & dual battery setup.
Pretty much most to all of what you're hoping for has already been done on here as well. Let me know if you need any help with the search function. I understand how it works but it seems for some it's not so easy.

I saw where the Raider ran in the 11s on the 1/4 mile, not blazing speed but good enough Say WHAT??! I have a video of a heavily modified turbo 2.6 Raider running a 14.5, but I have not seen one running anything close to 11's in 1/4 mile times. And to say 11's wouldn't be wicked fast is...wow...You're trying to push an oversize refrigerator box through the air. I'll MAKE you a trophy if you can break 12's with one of these. My Kawasaki 1200 didn't run 11's with ME on it. John B.
