Getting the Wheeling Fever
I went out to the car, started her, put her in reverse and heard a click...at that moment, my console and headlights went out..after further investigation, noticed radio, inside roof light and brake lights were out. When I played with the hazard switch and hit my brakes..the brake lights and turn signals (with out Intermittent blinkers) works, but my lights are out. Looking at the appdata forms, I found the light control relay and the turn signal and hazard signal flasher relays...could these be a issue? Trying to figure this out before mondays work day. help would be welcome.

also..i read in the chilton manual that the fuse for the headlights were on the left by the kickback...? are there fuses for the headlights and back lights that r hidden somewhere...? or is that just the relay units under the console?

You'd have to check the relays to see if they're not working but right now it appears to be a fusiable link. Your owner's manual (if you have one) should tell you the location of fuses. Year/model will help others help you. See if Chilton shows fusible link.

sorry..was too early in morning. She's a 89 2.6L, manual. I put her in reverse and heard the click and everything went out... The.chilton sucked...the.owner manual on here showed me where the relays are, but i didnt see the fusible links...I am thinnking its a relay...but would still like to locate fusible links..?

She was stolen on the 8th of november...found her a quarter of a mile down the road....close to a identical vehicle and a 4 door one...wondering if the snagged something and.ditched her and now its kicking me in the butt....

the haynes manual downloaded here was of better help than chilton...but those pdf of the auto manuals were excellent.

any other leads to why this all went out would be helpful...thank you

The 1989 online factory manual has a very good electrical section, with wiring diagrams and wire connector and harness locations and routing, and circuit diagrams keyed to the harness and connector diagrams, with connector diagrams that show which wire is which in each side of the connector. It also shows you how to read and use all these diagrams, and to trace sircuits, locate shorts, blown fuses and burnt fusible links, and how to test relays and components. You need at a minimum an auto 12v test light, cheap ones are a couple of bucks. A good meter and knowledge of how to measure voltage and resistance/continuity is most useful.

thanks for the tip. i replaced the headlight relay, old one had no continuity...new one from pick and pull was good...still No headlights, console, radio or back tail lights...DARN!!! as noted earlier, must be a fuse somewhere that I am missing. the search goes on...will get the 12v tester. thank you.

have you checked the hazard switch? it gets hung up between on and off, and kills nearly everything!

There are 2 fuselinks if I remember correctly. One is coming right off the battery + terminal. Its a 3 wire unit, one is for the alternator, one for the carb ECU and one for all the rest of the powered stuff. If this goes, the truck won't start, won't crank. The other fuzelink location is on the drivers side inner fender sort of near the brake master cylinder. This location is for the headlights. Its a small black box that the lid comes off to reveal the Fuzelinks. Should be labeled.

PlH: yes i saw the fuse box..took it off...there are three wire sets..each going over and connecting to the other side of the box..but I dont see any fuses (are the wires fuses...?) I am going to check it again. I see in the owner manual, the same thing, but I can't see any fuses, just the wires.

I know this...the console, head lights, signal and radio, and back lights are out...as in..first click to turn park lights and back, then second click on switch for head lights...don't know why, but my radio only works when i turn on my lights....Guy who had it before me, had alarm wiring crazy...I took it all off, but for some reason, afterward, radio only works with turn signal/light switch comes on. my windshield, washer and wiper on right of steering wheel works, but left (lights/turn signal) don't. I am wondering if that fuse is for those...can one switch work and other not? no light out there to check now..will look morrow. but for now, I am reading everything on here to figure it out.

I am going to check that fuse link on drivers side again...it has to be that or turn switch.....IF I didn't love her so much..I'd give her to the scrap...lol. She knows that will never happen...a work in progress. Thanks!

ps. She has to be worth it..i mean someone stole her and the other cars in my complex were prettier. Will let you know what i find out.

Yea, the wires are the fusses, its special wire. Available at NAPA and other places. The size you'll need is labeled on the wires and in the FSM. I believe Mits is consistent with color coding. Check with an ohm meter, and also check to see that they are flexible, not rigid. Kind of hard to explain that part unless you have a known bad one. Best check is with the VOM. You want zero ohms to be good.
