I've been offered first dibs on an 87 Raider. The owner doesn't even have it officially for sale yet. What I know so far is that it's got 120k original miles and the owner bought it in 1989. It was used for trips to the snow mostly, and was garaged when not in use.
I'm checking it out this week and was wondering if anyone had suggestions on things to look for/at.
The owner seems flexible on price. What should I expect to pay as an approximated fair price?
Any suggestions are welcomed. Hope to soon be joining the multiple monty club.

The 5-speed manual is a P.O.S. The automatic is great, and an '87 would be a 4-speed w/ OD.
The cooling system should be very carefully inspected; routine would be to have the radiator rodded, fan clutch checked, balance of system flushed, hoses and belts carefully gone through.
The idler arm is the first thing to check if the steering is loose.
It's going to be slow. Short of a turbo swap, not much else will cure that.
I've paid anywhere from $400 to $2500 for running ones over the past ten+ years. Use your best judgement.
They're lots of fun.

I personally don't feel the 5-speed is all that bad. I've seen some put through some pretty rough abuse and hold-up just fine. They just don't like a ton of torque. It's easier to gimp a M/T home from the trail than an auto, just FWIW.

I broke one m/t. It had 200k on it when it got a turbo grafted in front of it. It didn't get rebuilt. It had been abused some, pulling heavy stuff. It did almost 75k in front of the turbo with minor complaints. It died at 75mph cruise, leaving only 4th gear in the box, 100mi from home, and got me home with only 4th gear (2 red lights, only one of which I had to run). The a/t is such a nice match to the turbo conversion, I've never gone back to one, but kind of looking now for a v6 m/t...

The five-speed's not so bad.
I've got one behind a turbo rig and it does just fine. I had to have it rebuilt at about 190,000. Didn't have the scratch or patience to do otherwise.
I would like to have an A/T, but the M/T wouldn't be a deal-buster for me.
87 Montero, bought new, by me - 88/89 intercooled Starion Turbo engine- with awesome audio.

Thanks for all of the posts I'm checking out the rig after work tomorrow.
I'll make sure to look for built up crud in the radiator, as well as asking about general up keep, and if there were ever any problems or major work done.
Did the '87 come with an optional off-road package?
Thanks for the information.

I was hoping I would hear a yes from someone regarding the off-road package. I'm crossing my fingers that this Monty has the package...mostly for the LSD. I'm not a fan of open diffs.
